December: Garb Blogging Month

Dec 01, 2010 16:28

A costumer friend has declared December Garb Blogging Month. The timing is good for me, as I'm *finally* almost totally finished with Liar's Moon, and I'm planning to spend this month mostly resting (I had major surgery a week ago), stitching, and a little sewing.

It's been a couple of months (since Fair season ended and revisions began!) since I've ( Read more... )

I'm thinking you'd have fun in Germany! People dress "regular" for regular life--but there are still events where it is totally acceptable to wear Tracht. Okay, so adult men, adult women, and little children can be seen dressed like that on some occasions. One Sunday morning we were on the bus on the way to church (ie, the bus is normally completely empty then), only it was the local yearly carnival time (mm, kind of like Oktoberfest, only ours was older). They were all in Tracht--including the teenage son, who was slumped just about as low in his seat as possible. He looked ready to die if anyone recognized him!

As to the surgery, I hope you feel better soon! (Didn't I warn you that cross stitching can have drastic effects on the health? :)

I think I can say with confidence that the Castle Sampler absolutely caused NONE of my recent health issues. The same can not be said for... other creative endeavors. :b

And Tracht! I love it!

What a cute fair pic! I love your hat, and the pink corset. I miss renaissance faires -- we don't have one in Maine and haven't made it south to any of the other New England ones. I get to wear some of my garb at LARPs, but it's not quite the same...

Good luck with the last bits of Liar's Moon!

You're a Rennie? I should have guessed! I don't have the nerve for LARP, although I'd have loved it when I was a teen (I convinced my entire D&D group to dress up as our characters and go to MNRF about twenty years ago. Awesome.)

Several of my first dates with my now-husband were at ren faires (he does leathercrafting and worked for a couple years at the NY faire), so I will always have a soft spot for them! I'm not hardcore (or patient/talented) enough to make my own garb, other than simple skirts and cloaks, but I do love seeing the work of others. And I love that your D&D group went to a fair as your characters!

I love that purple damask. Yummy!

The lute player is not by Caravaggio, but by Orazio Gentileschi. The latter reminds of Caravaggio, but have a less erotic style. That said, Caravaggio painted a Magdalene with a patterned dress reminding slightly of your damask (the colour more than the pattern):

Thanks, Anea! I thought that didn't look right. And I knew which portrait you meant as soon as you mentioned the fabric. I think he painted at least two models wearing that same gown. You don't have a really good close-up of his St. Catherine, do you? I want to replicate the embroidery on the smock, but I can't see it well enough to tell what's going on.
