Because sometimes Google needs a filter

So ... I've come across several references that say infants sleep better on sheep/lambskins. However, most of these, although they in turn reference "a study done at Cambridge University" are on websites selling said skins. Therefore, I'm inclinded to take the claims with a pinch of salt, although I will admit to being favourably inclinded to ( Read more... )

I was told that if you put 'scholar' inthe google box in front of the item/article it would filter out the marketing results.

I don't know, though, I haven't actually tried it.

If the sheepskin works, go for it. From someone who is currently in the trenchs, I can tell you that if you find something that your little bub will sleep on, you will let them sleep !

We let Morgana sleep in her car seat on night a month or so ago, we had not really splet in days and she had finally settled in, we dared not move her. Em blogged about it the next day and a realtive in neo-natal care freaked on us. But Morgana is still ok, and the next day Em and I were both in much better shape to parent.

As far as SIDs go, again from limited experince here, but babys seem pretty tough. Don't let them fall between the cracks in the sofa, don't cover them up with blankies or other such idiocies and things seem to work out.

How are you going to define "sleeps better"? Infants wake up and cry every two hours.

On SIDS research hasn't given much information as to why it happens only really two things: A group of infants slept on their backs will have fewer members die than a group on their stomachs. A group of infants in a room with a fan running also have better outcomes. Since SIDS is almost exclusively a problem for very young infants, babies who are old enough to roll over are not really at risk.

I went poking through Cambridge's website. I didn't find the article you are looking for but I did find a Cambridge news release from 2005 about a different SIDS study (not related to sheepskins). That study was published in the Lancet journal.
I know that many of the journals have some online presence. You cannot usually read the article but you can at least read the abstract. If Cambridge has published in the Lancet before it might be worth while to check that website.

I could check snopes for you too.
