The thirteen year old boy in the house is on holiday with his cousins, but somehow I still found myself going to see Pacific Rim - a review if you don't know what I am talking about - Mark Kermode Reviews Pacific RimNot a subtle film, but my forty nine year old boy enjoyed it, and so did laosin and I - lots of robot/sea monster battles, but still ( Read more... )

I had so much damned fun watching this movie!

My boyhood Saturday afternoons were spend in front of my TV, watching the "Creature Double Feature," a compendium of monster movies from days of old. I'd watch, enthralled and happy as Ray Harryhausen's Rhedosaurus occupied Wall Street in The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms! As Ishiro Honda's creation Godzilla successfully battled lovely Mothra to the death, only to be defeated by her twin giant-caterpillar offspring in Mothra Vs Godzilla.

It's not for nothing that Pacific Rim is dedicated to Harryhausen and Honda. Their spirit lives and stomps whole cities in this fantastic theme-park of a movie.

And Idris Elba seems to have cornered the world's market of Charisma. Anybody else who wants to have any will have to eat him or something, because he has ABSOLUTELY ALL OF IT ON EARTH!!!

I still break into a big, goofy smile every time I think about this flick.

I'm glad you are grinning again :-)

I enjoyed this film too, with only about 20% of the context that you have. I think it's good when these nostalgia fests for the old school fans, and new viewers as well - things have been done properly!

I want to see this film a lot, and this is from someone who actually enjoyed Transformers and its sequels (I like giant things hitting each other, apparently) I had not heard about the 'takes two linked human minds' thing - now there indeed is a WEALTH of interesting possibilities (yes, my mind went to Murray and Djokovic first...)

We saw 'Despicable Me 2' recently and it was hilarious and camp and better on the Bechdel (ish), I recommend *g*
