WOW! I adore this mightily! You tripped me up, too - I thought it was Gene in the first part, I really did. You covered tracks really well!

I love that this is how Ray shows his support to the team; it's brutal and raw and morally wrong, but that doesn't mean it wasn't RIGHT. He was doing what he knew worked to get the information, and to tie up the loose ends. It was the only gift he could give Gene in that whole messy matter, too.

I admire how you balance the good and the "ugly" that is Ray. Amazing story! Thank you!

I'm really glad you liked it! I wrote it weeks ago and sat on it, not sure if it was finished or not.

I know I write Ray as a bit soft and soppy usually, so I thought I'd give his darker side an airing - really glad it worked! Thank you for commenting :)

Whew, yeah, I'm largely with Mikey who's already summed up the best part of this: It was the only gift he could give Gene in that whole messy matter That's exactly it, really. I could really see and feel Ray's perspective in that first scene, and I love how unsentimental he is in showing how he cares about Sam's fate and making sure he follows down every last lead before they leave for London. There's something pragmatic and brutal in what he does here, obviously, but it's very genuine and heartfelt at the same time. And very well done, as always. Thank you!

Thank you for commenting. Really pleased it worked for you. I just wanted to show that Ray would do something for Gene, even if it was brutal, because his loyalty to Gene comes above everything else.

Wow, what a fantastic fic! I could feel the pain Sam's death left in the team, and almost understood Ray's way of dealing with the situation and Gene's doubts about his friend. As Mikey said, what Ray did was morally wrong, but also terribly right from his point of view. I love how you portray his deepest feelings through his actions rather than his thoughts. Well done!

Just so you know, this fic is going straight into my faves folder.

Aww, thank you! It's great that you all enjoyed it. Ray's the sort of person who will happily break the rules when it's for 'justice' as we've seen. And I wanted to move away from writing him all soft and soppy :)

This was absolutely brilliant, Elf. Beautifully written too. Well done! I thought it was Ray and was pleased to see that it was him. It's a nice return to the darker side of Ray's nature.
