Should have gone on a Sunday morning for the service. Everyone for miles around went to Iona to go to church when we went, back in about 1991. The church was full and we had a good walk on the island too.

Wasn't there anyone in the shop?
If you'd banged on the door marked Community Room - or something like that - you might have found someone.
It's strange - I remember that door, and I remember the room I slept in, but otherwise I only remember the journey and the scenery - but I was only there for two nights

I went in the shop.

It's one of those unfortunate times when you've built up an image over years, using things other people have told you, so when you finally get there for real, it's nothing like you expect.

Lovely island though. Wish I'd had more time to get a better look.

I know - but it is very hard work there, and there aren't all that many people to do the work - so they will be spread around during the day.
Perhaps you were confusing the community of workers at the Abbey with the Iona Community, whose members don't live there?
The thing to do, if you want to see the work going on, is to stay overnight - or even apply to be a volunteer or worker! If you sty overnight, you meet the residents at meals
