Ugh... I used to do that landing routinely on the home from college. (Flights from Arcata were always routed through SFO). Not my favorite landing, either.
My mom's sister lives in the bay area and we used to visit her all the time when I was a kid. I remember one time I was sitting next to a man, I was somewhere between 6 and 10 probably, and the man was teasing me, saying "Oh look! We're landing in the water! Why are we doing that? Where's the runway? Is the pilot lost? Can planes land in the water?" (He was being goofy, it wasn't really as creepy as it sounds here...) But indeed, it really does feel that way, you don't see a runway until a few seconds before touching down, and the water feels very close!
it does feel a little eerie, that landing, especially when you don't remember that it's going to be like that. i haven't flown into sfo in such a long time now that i live in san jose, especially as san jose is the southwest hub.
