I need a new television, because my current one has a broken cable thinger and, for the first time in forever, I actually am trying out having cable again. And because its picture is too dark, so darkly-shot shows like Firefly and Buffy are kinda hard to watch. And that's pretty much all I watch. So a friend offered me one she was getting rid of, ( Read more... )

Also, seeing Lucius Malfoy in the graveyard made me realize again, with a force I haven't experienced since I first read GoF, before I ever found fandom, just how much hatred Harry rightfully has toward Lucius. It makes it easier to understand, despite all my empathy for Draco as a fan, how canon Harry can be so full of hatred for him, and have such a hard time emotionally distinguishing father from son.

I think this is why I have, and really have always had, such a hard time with the concept of H/D.

I LOVED the Death Eater costumes. They were terrifying in all the right ways. The wizard-style pointed caps being reminiscient of the KKK hoods, the half-masks and the evil power they contained... *shudders* I imagine that Harry must always see Draco with one of those masks superimposed over his own face from the Graveyard scene forward.

Yeah, I think having that visual imagery helped make it clear to me why so many fandom folks think even a friendship between Harry and Draco is unlikely to be possible (regardless of canonical likelihood).

At the same time, I think there's now an equally strong image for Harry - of Draco himself, in Book 6, refusing to kill Dumbledore... and of Draco bleeding from Harry's own curse. Hopefully some more mature level of understanding of Draco's potential not to be one of those men in the terrifying masks is creeping in.

Many DVD players have a coax output so you can connect to an older TV. Even if yours doesn't, you can probably pick up a converter at Radio Shack fairly cheaply. I looked at them a couple of years ago (most hotel TVs only have coax, but my iBook doesn't), and the only reason I didn't get one is that they're kinda heavy and bulky.

Ooh, that might be the solution! I don't have coax output on this DVD player, but I might go for a converter... I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!

How are you, anyway? I feel like I haven't seen you in forever, and I realize that's true, not since my birthday anyway. Maybe when the pre-LSAT crunch is over.

Heh, yeah. My life's been a little crazy, too. I leave for Tanzania in a month and a half, and I'm alternately excited and terrified that I won't be ready in time.

When will you be taking the LSAT? I won't be taking more than a day or two of vacation time for Christmas, so I'll be have plenty of time to kill while everyone else is away.

Did I ever thank you for this suggestion? My dad had one of these converters hanging around, so I picked it up at Thanksgiving, and it's working perfectly. My dad was worried that there'd be DRM in the DVD player that might not allow it to send output to a coax, but I guess mine is too old/cheap for the manufacturer to have thought of it. It actually isn't all that heavy or bulky, though it depends how light you're traveling. I guess it's about the size, tho not shape, of a large walkman, and a little heavier. Eh, I'll just show it to you next time you're over.

About Cedric:

but we still didn't particularly know him, and that's fine

You see, that bothered the hell out of me. I felt like when he died, if you didn't read the books, you really didn't give a bloody fuck. It bothers me because I really loved Cedric and I wanted my friends that haven't read the books to love him too. My sister, who hasn't read the books, was totally apathetic towards him. He was barely a blip in the movie.

On a whole though, I loved the movie. Mike Newell knew what he was doing, unlike Curano, who was a worthless piece of shit director. PoA was an abomination and I hated it. But GoF was the first of all the movies that really got Harry Potter. It was thrilling. The first two were okay, but completely lifeless and souless.

I agree with you about Lucius and Harry. Even though I am a faithful Harry/Draco shipper, I totally recognize that for that couple to ever happen that Harry has a lot to hash out with Draco.

Love,
Kelly
