Vampires ordered before the magister were allowed freedoms until their night of summonses. They were permitted to exist as they had, feed as they would, and rest as was norm. Of these freedoms, Eric availed himself only of rest, rising with the dusk and retiring at dawn. The remainder he ignored in a self-enforced confinement-- part implicit in Godric's statements as maker, not sheriff; part implicit in knowing the consequences of his actions as they pertained to his maker.

Though what consequences the Captain had bequeathed were a pitiable failure of punishment. Three days dispensed of their inconvenience, gone without witness by the passengers. Impulses fought with one thousand years of will were an irritation when they gained momentary triumph and he would have nothing to do with fish sauce for ten years at least, but they remained inconvenience, not deterrent.

This is where I feel regret?Eric bore familiarity with worse punishments, many dispensed by the magister against vampires he brought to tribunal. Their crimes ( ... )

Yet the humans acted though it could ever be different, and the actions of his maker seemed only to reinforce their arrogance. The Fellowship of the Sun considered themselves warrior saints, waiting to be martyred, filled with vacuous self-satisfaction that the eldest vampire in the New World had presented himself to them. It spread turmoil within the vampire culture, witnessed at the Hotel Carmilla, where Godric again refused to defend himself against slanderous claims, intimations of ineptitude ( ... )

There were many vampires, magisters and monarchs alike, that preferred to stand on ceremony for those that had shamed themselves by the laws. They kept full courts, or called them, for the express purpose of lording it over those who had done wrong. There was a heady rush of power involved in seeing another being that stood on otherwise equal footing with you brought so low by whatever means had done so. Vampires were great lovers of the gauche and gaudy, no matter how many of them pretended dignity ( ... )

There had been less forgiving moments experienced serving the sentence handed down by the captain and he would loathe the man for the discomforts, but it would not be an active thing upon which to obsess. Eric possessed a memory which would outlast many on this ship and it was in that he would recall the condescending announcement, the unfamiliar nausea when thoughts of blood and feeding arose ( ... )

Godric had no esteem for a captain that would so debase his passengers. The man was both puerile and petty, an authority figure worth neither respecting nor enduring. Godric's instincts, held in check longer than most humans could claim life, wanted to see the man brought to a slow and bloody end. On his head be it that they would meet in a dark corridor ( ... )
