Taking the stairs two at a time, Deuce listened to the crackle of the comm with half an ear. Normally, he would feel uncomfortable eavesdropping on others' conversations, but here it was different. It was assumed that if someone ( Read more... )

A knock at the door.

Batou looked up from his book and cocked his head. He could hear breathing on the other side of the door and that confused him, because it wasn't how the Major breathed. Who else would want to see him? Batou set The Critique of Pure Reason down on the desk and unlocked his knees from where he'd been standing. Unlike a biological human, Batou didn't tire or get sore from remaining in one position, so the posture in which he'd become interested in his book was the position that he remained in for hours.

A cursory check of his internal chronometer revealed that four hours had passed as he'd stood in the centre of the room, before the open window, reading.

Batou opened the door and looked down.

"Deuce. You brought flowers."

Deuce tipped his head a moment -- had he forgotten? -- before offering the roses to Batou. "I did say I would," he said, bending to pick up his violin. He felt a little odd, showing up without an invitation, but he had wanted it to be a surprise.

Deuce flashed a slight smile, rolling his fingers at warm yellow ruffles. "A dozen undying roses for your scientific pleasure, miro bau."

"Thank you," said Batou. Of course he hadn't forgotten, but he hadn't thought that Deuce would actually do it. Producing one rose had apparently been difficult, so it seemed that over a dozen must have been a serious undertaking.

Batou stepped back into the room, inviting Deuce inwards with a sweep of his thick arm. He gently held the roses in his other hand, then sniffed. His olfactory sensors reported that the roses were chemically identical to all other data on roses available. Fascinating.

"You play the violin?" asked Batou, moving to place the buoquet on his unused dresser.

Deuce huffed a laugh and followed Batou in, shutting the door. "One of my few arrogances," he admitted, trailing his fingers down the violin case's latch. He had played it for Ace, spinning music and calm like a protection charm's weave. It wouldn't last, it never did, but perhaps it would be enough to give his brother a few nights of easy thoughts and uninterrupted rest.

Deuce looked down at the violin held in front of him, then back up, watching Batou inspect the roses. Was there something he should be doing? Unsure, he stepped further into the room, feeling a bit of an idiot.

"Do-- ah, have you a favorite composer?" he asked, falling back on something he knew.
