❄ The army's no match for NORA!

Jul 08, 2010 19:58

The sky had never looked so bright before. Sparkling stars reflected on a watery mirror... A soothing sight, a glorious scene. A view he had not seen in ages, and yet he had never forgotten; Bodhum would never leave his heart, no matter where he was. His fondest memories belonged here, along with his friends, his first experiences, his first ( Read more... )

Tch.

That small, little sound of hers caused a shiver to run down his spine. long and ominous. He wanted to ask her what she was doing there, but everything screamed Sanctum, from her clothes to the glint in her eyes; she had no time for him, and her demeanour was crystal clear.

"You're kidding me, right?" he started, cautious, glaring at her from a small distance -a few feet at most- and trying to keep his breathing even. "Tell me this isn't true."

But he already knew the answer to that; old habits die hard, and so he lost himself in denial once more, refusing to believe that even Lightning would go that far. After all they'd done, and with Serah gone? No. There had to be an explanation, and a pretty damn good one at that.

He peeked at the soldiers around, far enough not to hear them if they whispered. But he wasn't going to friggin whisper. Not until she'd given him a good reason as to why she was being there with her weapon.

"On guard with your little friends?" he snarled, nodding briefly at the soldiers ( ... )

'You're kidding me, right?' Lightning knew immediately that this was going to be one of those days. Then again, it seemed like every time she'd run into him had been 'one of those days', since-...

Her jaw tightened.

Since nothing. Since nobody lost anyone. Since nobody's sister died after- No. She'd done alright for most of the day. Better than yesterday, at least. And he wasn't about to come marching in and drudge up all the feelings she'd kept so carefully in check. She refused to allow it.

'On guard with your little friends?' Duty alone kept her anger in check, though her hand slipped down to the handle of her gunblade, the movement tense but carefully slow. Her face was blank, emotionless, aside from the tension in her jaw of course. "A soldier on duty has no friends," came her reply, smooth despite the fact that he'd obviously gotten to her.

A soldier on duty has no friends.

"An ex-soldier has no place here, either," he growled, walking up to her in nonchalant steps, purposely ignoring her hand on the handle of her weapon. "What the hell're you doing, Light? That's the best idea you could think of? The Sanctum?"

His voice was still rather calm then as he closed the distance between them, but he knew he was about to lose it, just as she probably expected. She couldn't possibly join the army again and think he would just pass by and say nothing. Not after everything they'd done. Not after all the fighting, the wounds, the exhaustion, the pain, the frustration. Memories flashed in his mind at the speed of light, each one tensing up his body a little more. How could she? How could she side now with the enemy after all that she knew?

How could she do this to Serah?

"THEY. KILLED. SERAH!" he yelled then, infuriated, not even bothering to stop and choose better words; of course, he knew Serah wasn't dead - or he certainly hoped she wasn't - but it didn't matter now. She was ( ... )

"Don't you dare try to pull that." Her voice was carefully even. If she raised it at all, she could be written up, and for someone in her position, that meant fired. Lightning shot a glance to the closest soldier, who was watching the spectacle Snow was making, even taking a few steps closer to neutralize him. She shook her head at the man, raising a hand slightly. Apparently code for 'I've got this', because he hesitated, then stepped back to his post.

In a quieter (but no less frigid) voice, she continued to explain. "This is the Guardian Corps, not PSICOM. We aren't branded--they aren't the enemy."

But somehow she knew that excuse wouldn't fly. How could she explain herself? Better question yet, why should she bother? She owed it to Serah (her hands closed into troubled fists now) to say what she had thus far. And she owed it to herself, she felt, not to put up with him. His guilt-tripping. As if someone had to tell her to feel like shit without Serah. As if she hadn't felt like shit for almost a week already.
