We have come to the conclusion that the bannister will not be stained, but merely painted. The wood is too soft, too full of nicks, and too lacking in a decent grain for staining to make much sense. Especially when compared with the other stained wood in the house. Now I have to think about colors. Argh. Colors don't really have the impact on
