We have come to the conclusion that the bannister will not be stained, but merely painted. The wood is too soft, too full of nicks, and too lacking in a decent grain for staining to make much sense. Especially when compared with the other stained wood in the house. Now I have to think about colors. Argh. Colors don't really have the impact on me that they do on other people. We need to paint the stairway area something bright and light (it's pretty dark in there), but I don't know whether the bannister should be the lightest color, or the darkest. I'm kind of thinking it should be lightest color, otherwise it'll form sort of a visual gravity well. But I distrust my judgment on this type of stuff.
Spent the evening playing "salad bowl" with
michaellee,
vorrant,
jklumpp,
weasel_king,
theseamster and
moneygod, in what must count as a sort of LJ summit. "Salad bowl" is basically a name-guessing game, with a ton of names written on little slips of paper and tossed into a bowl. With a geeky group with a lot of strange social connections, it can get pretty wicked and evil. The high point of the evening was probably what I blurted out in response to "Sixties heartthrob singer, he had one name." The correct answer was Fabian. For some bizarre reason, I said Topol. Giggling fits continued to flare up the rest of the night. I'm certain that the next time we get together to play this, about a dozen slips with "Topol" on them are getting tossed into the bowl.
The Vikings are now officially bums. Sonuva... What is with this team and stupid turnovers?!
