A quick thought

So, let's take two steps back to before House of the Dead.

What if Jack was the one who was constantly sharing his feelings, saying "I love you" to Ianto a la this as a casual, everyday sort of thing, and Ianto was the emotionally closed one ( Read more... )

Yay Ianto and Carlie!

I'm actually writing this epically long thing where I try to puzzle out why I haven't embraced House of the Dead fully, and probably never will. And I think the fact that fandom was forced to deal with it on their own terms was something good, and pandering to us isn't necessarily the best step to take ( ... )

I have no idea whether I can fully embrace House of the Dead completely either. Now that it's been a day or so, I find that it's left me with this weird lingering feeling that I can't put my finger on, and it's kind of driving me nuts! Maybe reading your puzzling-it-out post will help me too ( ... )

And Jack needed to say it.Yeah it's the things that you don't end up saying or doing that you tend to end up regreting the most especially when someone dies suddenly so while I would have probably cringed to the point of contortion if Jack had said 'I love you' in COE for a whole host of reasons, not all of them charitable, I was fine with him saying it in the radioplay for what it was worth ( ... )

READERS ALWAYS MAKE FIC BETTER. :D

The line where Ianto says that Jack doesn't need to say it back? I thought it was going to end there and that was going to be our confirmation. It was so perfect that he made that point and I was all ready to wallow in it forever, really. (HE DOESN'T PLUCK FLOWERS. I can see doubt, because Jack is such an enigma, but Ianto is not a weepy, indecisive wallflower!)

But I'm good with the fact that they kept going for ALL YOUR REASONS. I like to think that Ianto is able to treasure the moment in some capacity, even though it was all about Jack, and it was Jack's closure that we were given here.

I like the idea of Ianto have other love interests besides Jack and Lisa even though the actress playing Carlie didn't exactly sell me on her. So I'll definitely read your Ianto/Carlie fic.

I kinda interpret their relationship as a one-sided thing in which Carlie liked Ianto but he fell for Lisa before they really got anywhere/did anything. But I'm having fun puzzling them out in fic!

Dude, I have always written Jack and Ianto that way. I guess I'm just ahead of the curve XD

YOU ARE THE MAGIC. *sparkles*

I suspect that my thought process has definitely picked stuff up from you. (I frequently read Club Wales when I'm having a bad day. That's a lot of reading Club Wales sometimes.) But it feels like fandom default has always been "oh, Ianto confesses his True Love and Jack is too scared/repressed to say it back in this one moment! HOW COULD YOU NOT SAY IT. HOW????" *fandom flail* And...it doesn't always have to be that way! *points to you*

I mean, Jack is always so quick to praise them all and has had so many lovers in the past that he makes reference to that I just can't see him in this "I can never be with anyone because I can't open myself up to anyone because I am immortal and it will hurt me" light that fandom seems to cast him in. Like, yeah, he angsts about it sometimes, but I have never gotten the impression that he's hardened his life to everyone, unlike, you know, the rest of fandom. (Until CoE, but that's another story for another comment ( ... )

I've always thought of "closed-off" Jack as just where he is in his LOOOONG life. When he first meets Ianto, he's waiting around for the Doctor, not committing to a real relationship, fine. When he gets back, he's just been told that there is no cure - he's going to be trapped like this forever. I can see him trying to close himself off as a way to try and train himself to be colder. He's loved and lost before (Estelle, unnamed wife...) but he thought he only had 100 years to kill. Ianto caught him at a particularly bad moment. I've read at least two fantastic fics that run with that idea (and some timey-wimey ness) to show that future!Jack will be far more adjusted and open and truer to himself.

Oh, Ianto. I mean, I've written about this before, but really, we're working with so little that you can justify lots of interpretations. I love yours. I think Cyberwoman as PTSD fallout works the best, but if we take that he was desperately in love with her, and digging himself deeper for weeks/months/???? then it could easily just be ( ... )
