A Confession... of sorts

Oct 21, 2007 14:39

I’ll go ahead and forewarn those of you who are only watching me for me art, or who are not religious, or not Christian, that those subjects are what this entry are all about. Namely, my religion, Christianity, and the fact that I’m bored to death.

cut for very long rant and if you actually read it all I will be amazed at you )

whining, religion, christianity

Thanks for the sympathy. *hugs* I know a lot of churches can be really judging, and I guess I've been pretty lucky that mine isn't. So the stuff that's getting to me isn't necessarily what drove you away, but I can understand where you're coming from. I still think that church is an important thing for a Christian, if for no other reason than because having a community and network of people who believe the same thing you do is important. In fact (and pleeeease don't take this as me being preachy at you), if judgmental and narrow-minded people are what drove you away, I really think maybe you ought to give the whole church thing another chance, but in a new place. 'True' churches may be few and far between, but they do exist, if you look for them. At least I hope so, seeing as I may be looking myself soon... XD

MY TL;DR--LET ME SHOW IT TO YOU! quaedam October 21 2007, 19:38:33 UTC
Well, I don't suppose your school has a school of theology, or that there is perhaps a nearby school with a theology department at which you could cross-register? Reading theology and philosophy is one of my very greatest pleasures (and turned into my thesis, as well ^^) and I was lucky enough to be going to school just down the road from another school with a large and old divinity school so it was possible to take courses there. But there's definitely a long way you can go just reading on your own ( ... )

....all I can say is, WOW, thank you. If I tried to respond to everything you said, I feel I would be typing forever. But be assured, I'm taking notes, and I really can't thank you enough for all the reading recommendations. I'll admit it feels like a huge reading list to be given so soon after finally graduating from college, but I also have a feeling it'll be a helluva lot more interesting and important than much of what I read in college was. XD I think it'll be fun.

I read the whole thing, so I guess I'm amazing anonymous October 21 2007, 23:08:10 UTC
It makes me excited to read a post like this for a couple of reasons. The first is rather selfish - I get a chance to know you better, and it opens up the door for some fantastic future conversations. I'm a big fan of good conversations about deep topics. The second is that I think it's good, for you and the world, to experience a longing for something deeper. While that longing, along with most of our good desires, can be turned to something negative (such as cynicism and a festering discontent), I think that almost everyone who truly knows God approaches Him from this place of truly longing for something more ( ... )

Yup, you're amazing. *grin* But I already thought that anyway.

It may sound silly, but you're actually one of the people I was most interested to get a reply to this entry from. This is something I would definitely like to talk with you and Liz about in person, if and when you're up for it.

I'm adding your book recommendations to my list, and yes, I would love to borrow some of them from you, if that's okay. I will warn that I can be a slow reader, however, so lend with caution. ;)

Religion completely fascinates me. The history of the Christian church is so interesting to me. I agree with some of the above posts. Try reading some of the histories and philosphies of the church. At least this way you'll be able to experience something different from what you've grown up with.

On a lighter note: Remember at your going away party when your dad handed me the Jesus pamphlet? lol

Heee, history of most sorts is fascinating to me. XD *is a dork*

And OMG, I completely forgot that my dad had done that. Usually he's not the pamphlet type, in fact I can't actually think of a time I recall seeing him do that. You must just be very special. ROFL
