Ah, that makes sense. I almost can't believe I'm geek enough that I actually understand what you just said!

My computer is NTFS, so I'll be sure to check with customer support about that before I buy anything. I totally wouldn't have thought of that if you hadn't said anything, so whew, thanks.

Western Digital and Seagate are both good brands; my father has had good success with both. And yes, that 1TB drive sounds like a very sweet deal.

My old computer doesn't believe in the external hard drive ... which is making it hard to transfer the data to this new one.

Ours is a Western Digital. But it doesn't look like that, even though the capacity is the same. Maybe the Mac ones look different. I don't think the Apple store people would be selling them if the company didn't make good products - Apple is picky that way.

External HD's are good but Nothing beats a more secure media backup such as dvd's or cd's

Not to be belligerent, but why? I have a hard time having *more* confidence in little flat pieces of plastic that I'm prone to lose or scratch than in something more, well, substantial. I know that there's a reason you say that, though, and you have a lot more experience with it than I do, so I honestly want to know. :)

Besides that, though, you didn't answer the question I was actually asking. I.e. is the drive I linked to worth considering? DVD backup or not, I *do* also need more hard drive storage space.

I haven't ever delt with that specific drive, but WD is a good brand, they came up with a lot of the technology that current Hard Drive technology rests on ( ... )

I recommend Western Digital. My other half swears by it and in this house we have 4 of them. Haven't had any trouble with the MyBook drives whatsoever.
