Reminder that I need to go to the doctor and use my insurance, blah. and ah yes that article! I just didn't want it to end, /clings It was a ton I'd never heard before, which is just so new in the endless cycle of kpop info. omg were Hoot and The Boys both in October? I feel like they're going to do both domestic and Japanese promotions, which is cray, but I don't consider them incapable of anything, unfortunately. I haven't listened to The Boys at all recently either, that time of year again when I am like filler traaaaacks :D

Do it!! And yes it was so full of stuff about the like, construction of SNSD/SM groups in general?? Which I am obsessed with. Like there is just nothing more fascinating to me than how streamlined their process is? I love a lot of non-big 3 groups but SM/JYP/YG really do have the process down to an art. And yeah that's what I thought at first too but as we get deeper into October and it gets weirder that they haven't mentioned a Korean comeback officially, especially since the Japanese releases in November have been confirmed.

I'd never heard about the handbook before and how detailed it was, but it works. and yeah ofc I want a corean comeback but I'm fine if they just do Japan because I honestly think they need to. don't want them to be spread so thin :/

I wish the Japanese stuff was later tbh, because even though their Japanese MATERIAL is better I love Korean comebacks more?? Bc there are so many more music shows and they always do a bunch of variety together rather than one at a time. So like. I do desperately want them to come back, but not if they have to fly back and forth all the time :/

re: SNSD article, I thought it was interesting too.. but that Uncle Perv mentions made me feel really uncomfortable. He clearly needs to read that blog about ahjussi fandom. Also cultural technology lol, isn't it just really good marketing!!

did you hear that new snsd song cheap creep? it's pretty awesome man.

Yeah, that section made me feel a little ill at ease. Apparently his portrait of jpop as more fetishizing was semi-inaccurate too? And lol it is good marketing, but I think the term fits to a degree?? Like obv the SM PR machine has a lot to do with their group's success, but I still think a pretty good amount of SM's genius is their ability to select trainees, train them, and then select group members out of their trainee pool rather than just their ability to promote them. Like I LOVE reading about idols who trained under the big 3 but didn't debut under them because I think it reveals a lot about the selection process and how much more complex it is than just "well, s/he's talented/pretty", and I do think their popularity extends beyond "they have more money" (although that's a big part of it). They do have it down to an art, and you could definitely apply the term "cultural technology" to it but... I guess there's something a little bit weird about saying that about a process that involves people ( ... )

Yeah I think to some extent - the fetishizing in Kpop is less overt in the traditional way (I think the closest one was the beginning of Genie). While jpop is just very obvious and yes the way AKB48 does it is pretty scary and really popular. But I think it's also normalized in ways bc of their porn industry. I think AKB48 literally has like 50 girls and in Taiwan we have this official AKB48 themed cafe that is just beyond idolization, I've passed by and it is just really weird!! ... We have a non-official SuJu cafe too which I've never passed by but apparently there are just like framed photos of them lol. If you ever visit, we can go. HAHA ( ... )

Yeah I agree -- it's there, just less obvious. But it's not all of it in either case. AND L O L @ the Suju cafe thing, if I do I am definitely taking you up on that!

They do all have a different process! But loooool, okay yeah, when you put it that way. The SM Art Exhibit was so over the top, I still can't even. there seems to be a serious effort from the management to try to take technology seriously. I don't know if it's a sincere effort to try to legitimize pop/idol culture or what. This is definitely possible! I'm really wondering what they're trying to do with SNSD right now -- I wasn't suspicious of this article before but did you see that Nightline thing that aired last night?? It was so hilariously obvious SM paid to get that on the air, and now I wonder if the SNSD article was part of that same effort and if so -- why?? It seems like they have way too much going on in Asia to put out more US stuff right now and I'm just... I don't know. I don't know what I want.

LOL YES OMG
