We should all watch China Beach together, and I'm told I did good

My presentation went pretty well! My advisor tweeted that I did a good ethnography of Community fandom, and people told me I did well, and didn't qualify it with "for an undergrad." I was in a really neat panel with people who presented on online fan practice. I went first, and the lady who went after me presented on a vid for Lord if the Rings set ( Read more... )

Oh course you did well! You're passionate, articulate, and curious.

I'm very proud of you, Lexi.

I remember China Beach primarily for three things: an excellent essay someone wrote for a media journal on the problematic depictions of women in it particularly the "virgin/whore" dichotomy (like Joss, the male creators of the show loved to play with those tropes in ways that don't compute for me as a female viewer); that it's name is one half of a trope that I can't mention without a big spoilery-spoiler but will after you've watched it...

and for the after-war back in America last season that was my favorite because it depicted the protagonist trying to get help for her PTSD and everyone around her, including/esp other veterans, assuming she was trying to get help for "her husband" until she corrected them. So it probably would be interesting to rewatch.

I agree - the last season, when getting other veterans to acknowledge the possibility of PTSD (not sure it even had a name yet) in any of the women was a big eye-opener.

I have a vivid memory of the main character banging on the glass and yelling at an atheletic club because the sound of a squash(?) game and balls hitting the wall reminds her of the sounds of battle ( ... )

China Beach was an awesome show, although I'm not sure how/if it would resonate with anyone who doesn't remember that era. Hope you get a chance to watch some of it. I'll be interested in your thoughts.

Here via LJ's recent posts feature. Since it finally came out on DVD, I asked for and received China Beach for Christmas. I would love to participate in (and even help with) a group rewatch if you ever decide to do it. I'm envious that you got to hear the panel presentation on the series.
