We should all watch China Beach together, and I'm told I did good

My presentation went pretty well! My advisor tweeted that I did a good ethnography of Community fandom, and people told me I did well, and didn't qualify it with "for an undergrad." I was in a really neat panel with people who presented on online fan practice. I went first, and the lady who went after me presented on a vid for Lord if the Rings set ( Read more... )

the last season, when getting other veterans to acknowledge the possibility of PTSD (not sure it even had a name yet) in any of the women was a big eye-opener.

Agreed. I have a vivid memory of the main character banging on the glass and yelling at an atheletic club because the sound of a squash(?) game and balls hitting the wall reminds her of the sounds of battle.

That's something that China Beach and btvs share - women who have lived in war zones, living with untreated/unacknowledged trauma - and were perhaps ahead of the curve in that regard. Three years ago I went to my local library, which admittedly hasn't the greatest collection, to look up books on the subject for myself and the only ones there were focused on men specifically male soldiers. I'm sure I'd find far more if I just hopped online, but that was the thinking for the longest time. (the first time my therapist said that she thought I had ptsd my immediate thought was "No, I couldn't possibly" because I made the same mental connections.)

And - OH! - I just remembered there is a young female character in that last season 20 years after the
(20-something?) female character who I really enjoyed watching in that last season at the time and I'd bet Lexi would too. It was my bad luck I enjoyed the show the most right when it was wrapping up.
