It was haunted in the foggiest depths of his mind? I have things that are haunted that way too.

I imagine that the second you step in, it's a long long fall with nothing to grab on to. You fall for first seconds, then minutes, then hours into days, and when you finally think you're going to hit--you don't. Suddenly, after several weeks of falling, you come into this foggy patch, which amazingly has even less substance than the space you've been falling through, which lasts for an eternity. And then you die before you find out if there's a bottom, which, by the way, there isn't. Because the hole wasn't even there to begin with...
