My hubby and I bingewatched 'Stranger Things' the past couple of days. When it was released in July, I saw a lot of my online friends go nuts over it. So we decided to finally check it out
( Read more... )
Watched it with Leen a couple of months ago in one sitting. We both loved it to bits as it reminded us of 80's movies like The Goonies, E.T., Poltergeist, The Thing and The Gremlins. We were really impressed with the child actor's performances in this one.
One of the reasons this one really appealed to us was because it's... short. Sounds weird, but we're avid watchers of Game of Thrones, House of Cards and The Walking Dead, taking up most of our free time (together with a couple of anime series, animated TV series, gaming in general and the occasional movie) throughout the year. Sadly, our "series to watch"-list is getting more ridiculous every year and when a short-but-sweet like this one starts popping up on friends' social media pages, we're quick to jump on it.
P.S.: Is it possible I spotted you at FACTS this past sunday (actually, it was Leen who spotted you and pointed it out to me, as I was too focused on the vendor stands ^_^) ? Were you there with your husband and son, by chance?
Whilst I didn't see you (too focused on the little munchkin), I'm pretty sure that you did see us. We were there on Sunday from 11.00 to 14.30-ish. Did you enjoy FACTS this year?
*SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN STRANGER THINGS*
I was also impressed with the child actors, especially Eleven, Mike and Dustin. I was just a bit disappointed with the ending : Eleven dying, everything appearing all happy and sappy (the guys winning their D&D campaign, the Byers family sharing a X-mas meal together, etc.) and the obvious 'Season 2 is coming' bait with Will coughing up a slug.
But I definitely hear you on the 'watching something that is short' appeal. Now that I'm back at work, I only have about 2 hours between Sam's bedtime and our bedtime to do fun stuff. So I spent it surfing online, playing WoW and occasionally watching anime. I simply don't have the time to commit to any long-lasting series or shows that have 50+ min episodes.
FACTS has become more like a yearly guilty pleasure to us now. Call it tradition :) We don't buy as much merchandise as we used to, 'cause holy fuckballs, most of the prices have become insane.
For example: we were interested in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo 3DS a merchant was selling. Since it's a platinum (Nintendo Essentials they call it) game, the normal store price is around 20 euro. The guy tried charging us 40 euro for it... When I confronted him about his pricing, he just blew us off.
Another merchant had some boxed PVC figures I was interested in, but had the price stickers on the back of the boxes... on his shelves... behind him... out of arm's reach... le sigh. When I asked to check out a couple of them, my knees went weak. 275 euro he asked for this one:
Holy balls indeed, that's some crazy mark-up prices.
FACTS and Made in Asia are our guilty pleasures, tho we rarely buy stuff there. Our FACTS experience was pretty good. It was the first time that we took our baby boy to a big event like this. Gotta start them off young ;) When we arrived, he fell asleep for an hour, given us time to check out the different vendors. After that, we took turns holding him. He loved it. There was so much for him to look at.
I didn't quite get to check out the vendors in as much detail as I might've looked. But honestly, I think this was the first year where I had no intention on buying anything. We were on the look-out for Overwatch Funko's. My hubby LOVES Overwatch but much to our surprise, none of the vendors had Overwatch Funko's. They had Funko's for pretty much everything else but not Overwatch. Speaking of Overwatch, this was one of my favourite cosplayers that I spotted :
I liked it a lot. The ending was so so, but the admosphere was great. Tom and I have watched a lot of shows just for the "scenery". Penny Dreadful was beautifully made and a pleasure to look at. It was only so so to watch, though. The plot felt like an afterthought. There were some nice pearls in there, but in total it lacked. I felt Stranger Things was better in that aspect.
I also watched Penny Dreadful but as you pointed out, it was beautiful to look at but the plot was a let-down. The finale of Penny Dreadful still annoys me 'cause I feel like it basically made the previous seasons count for nothing.
