I have a rather odd preoccupation that prevents me from enjoying lolita to the fullest, and am curious if anyone else experiences this and/or has advice for how to overcome it.
TBH it sounds more like you have social anxiety. People wear bulky clothing and carry umbrellas all the time, and people won't get mad at you unless you're being obviously self-centered and dangerous (e.g. splaying yourself and your things all over multiple seats on a bus/train, holding or storing your umbrella in a way where it can hurt someone).
If you only feel this way when wearing lolita, it's probably more to do with acute self-consciousness, and you'll eventually get past that as you wear it out more often and with other people.
Just bear in mind that petticoats squish and parasols fold up- your silhouette might make it look like you'd take up a lot of space wearing lolita, but a lot of it is just fluff and air. And if you're really concerned about your skirt brushing against people, you could probably squeeze your petticoat into a compact bag while you're out in public; when you get to where you need to be you can take it out, shake it back into shape, and slip it on again.
It also takes a bit of practice and time to learn how to maneuver around with a full skirt and petticoats underneath. You have to be aware of everything within a three-foot radius of you. X3 Try walking around your house a few times in full loli regalia and challenging yourself to get as close to objects as possible without actually touching them. You'll get the hang of it!
You said you don't come from a crowded place, but do you come from a wide open space? Usually people from more sparsely populated places need more personal space, whereas people who come from crowded places are used to being packed together with other people.
It isn't rude to take up space. Just be aware of those around you and learn to step aside if it would be polite.
I have been carrying parasols for years and have yet to have them be an issue. As it has been said, just fold it up if you aren't actively using it for shade and never open it indoors.
I totally understand! I tend to get brushed against more when poofy, and I take up lots more room when in public, which makes public transportation pretty bad.

Or, try wearing one less floofy until you feel comfy wearing it, then switch up to the bigger one. Sorta ease into it.
