Career Lolitas (and other subculture types, if you are goth or mori or anything else too)

May 04, 2011 22:35

First up, this is NOT a "how can I be more Loli at work" post. I know that has been done to death, and that's not my question. I'm really more curious about people who have "career" type jobs. Jobs that are a 9-5ish, where you are working full time, on a career path, and must, absolutely MUST wear a conservative suit. I am starting to look for jobs ( Read more... )

I think if you are wearing a more mature version of lolita (like you have mentioned) I doubt any of your peers will look down on you. In fact, they will probably very well be interested in your fashion.

Now, on the other hand if you were out wearing OTT Sweet or even just regular sweet lolita I don't think they would look at you the same or even respect you. I mean, be honest, how could you respect someone professionally in the office when you see them dressing like a kid on the streets?

Oh fynn_fish, just a btw (which you are fully aware of, most likely), you're probably gonna get a few people butthurt by saying that sweet lolita is like "dressing like a kid on the streets".

LOL, I figured I would, and so I'm just gonna say I dont have a problem with OTT Sweet/Regular sweet at all. But when you are like 30 and wearing it... Well, of course your colleagues are going to see it as dressing as a child.

I should have said you would "ruffle some petticoats". Hurr hurr.

But yeah, the people that are gonna bitch are gonna be people that have too much time on their hands and a very thin skin. Most of them aren't gonna think logically and realize that "normal" people aren't gonna see it as a fashion statement, but as a fetish, or something along those lines.

IMO it honestly depends on the type of people you work with (e.g. whether it has a poisonous gossip culture or not) as well as the city you work. I'm lucky enough to live in a very liberal city wherein a lot of the business culture is that you present a professional, conservative face at work/to your clients, but what you do outside of it is your own business as long as there's no conflict of interest involved. YMMV depending on the size of the company (e.g. multinationals vs nationals vs homegrown), but the general laissez-faire attitude of the local/modernised culture starts to seep in/override a lot of arsehole-tightening rules ( ... )

My day career is marketing, and I would never let my colleagues know about lolita, simply because they are all conservative middle aged men (accounting, CEO, sales consultants, sysadmin) and they just would not understand. A supplier of ours was told by someone that I am a lolita, but I am not particularly concerned as she is female, around my age and we get on quite well.

I don't go anywhere they would go, so that's a plus for me. Various ex-coworkers know I am a lolita, and one flat out didn't recognise me because I was in sweet and wearing a wig. I think I scared her, hah. Just don't let them join your Facebook page if a lot of your content is lolita-related.

Not to say that being gay and being lolita is in anyway the same...but this reminds me of my girlfriend (who works for the county emergency management down here in the South)'s take on being gay in a conservative work atmosphere ( ... )

I keep my work life and social life separate. I go to goth clubs and know quite a few people with professional lives that will go clubbing and do their artistic thing in their not at work time and it's no issue. I think most people worry too much about being seen outside of the office when your spare time is your time, and other people really have no place in your business. Most people I've had positive on this anyways, I wear nice clothes to work, people find it respectful. Your style sounds pretty nice and mature anyways so I don't think they would look down on you at all.

This. I dress in some pretty crazy stuff out at goth and cyber clubs. My last two jobs (both in labs) the people at work never saw me out (apart from the one guy who was a rocker and therefore also went clubbing many of the same places I did) and therefore never even knew what I dressed in occasionally. Whilst I was at work I dressed in appropriate attire for work (shirt, trousers, shoes protecting the feet, lab coat), out of work, my job has no bearing on what I dress like.
