transit building and pantry plants

Yesterday Nancy and I visited the open house for the artist's studios in the Transit Building. Here's a photo of the spiral fire escape through a 2nd story window - what a neat old building. It would be nice to have a studio there just to savor the architecture everyday:

I always feel overwhelmed when I see other Artists' works...including yours..and then I question mine.I think to myself that I am in good company and fellowship with them. Consider it part of the process.

It is so easy to get immune to the value of one's own art. I see other's art and I start to compare the apples of theirs to the oranges of mine and the apples always look better. How can a person compare jewelry to an acrylic painting, assemblage art, or stained glass for that matter but that's what I was doing yesterday. Or even within the same medium - how to compare one person's style to another's? I can't. Oh well - onward and upward today...

Don't you think most artists feel that way about their art? I know I do, too. We're our own worst critics. I wonder if it's just seeing the familiarity of our own work all the time and so it's not too exciting, like seeing new and different things of other artists. (I'm sure there's some exceptions though of those who don't feel that way.)

Anyways, I think your art--all your art-- is exceptional. Everytime I talk to someone about my sister and mention that she's an artist, too, I always add at the end, "but she's much better than I am." Which is exactly what I've always thought.

That staircase is spectacular! There is a LJ community that is titled, "Buildings," I think. That would be perfect there. Do you belong? I think I do.

Yes, I think that is a universal feeling. Comparing is BAD. But hard not to do.

Thanks. I don't belong to "buildings". I rarely take pictures of buildings! This was a rare one.

P.S. That Chloe is really something! The plants looks great. When did you get so many? I didn't even think you had any.

A couple of the plants were given as gifts after dad died and some I had next door and brought over and some were dad's, already here. The back room has been such a mess you could hardly find them hidden under the kids toys.

those little books for the gardening conference is a great idea -- you could market them as gardening journals!

p.s. and i love both of those pictures!

Thanks - I had such a nice time yesterday with you - just the right level of (hopefully contained) giddiness (on my part) and seriousness!

I'm thinking too that blank books with actual dried flowers all over, embedded in the paper covers should appeal to gardeners.

Your building image is worthy of being put in a gallery!... i thought it was a photo that you saw there... so not only are you an artist but also a photographer. Tho' I totally understand that feeling of not being as good as...
