I was so pleased with how the goldfinches turned out yesterday that I thought maybe I'd paint more birds from the Peterson Field Guide bird book. Cut for lots of boring self-talk: ( Read more... )
As one of your faithful readers lo these many years, I think making art is your way of expressing yourself. I don't see you needing to use that art as communication. (Just as an example: your infrared photos. They are interesting to you, and you don't really care if they're interesting to other people.)
I think there is a difference between self-expression & communication. Artists often tailor a personal vision in the interest of making it more comprehensible to some third person because communication is what's most important to them.
first - yesterday's bird is fantastic!!!! i loved it but was too tired to write
You are an Artist! because that's the way you think and see!!! you do it because you need to for you
the commercial aspect is something different it is sometimes a necessity but it has nothing to do with vision
i wanted to be a different kind of artist i wanted to do display work store windows / counter display/ ads and announcements in a way i did some of that in the other nonart jobs i had because i have an eye for it I ended up in all kinds of "social service / volunteer projects" work i created programs /ran services and projects - and did all that display/publicity
2am is the magic hour! (and peach brandy can be a magic elixir) there was some sort of chant i once knew "Spirit is alive Magic is a foot" it would seem to fit art at 2 am
That’s awesome that your artwork sold so quickly! That must be a really good feeling :)
I understand your dad‘s feelings, probably coming from the generation that he came from, and raised by the generation before that, the majority of whom had to work at jobs that had nothing to do with their passions, interests, or really anything that any human being should be spending the majority of their life doing.
I think that we are entering a period of realization-with AI and a lot of technology that can take over some of the necessary jobs out there (like cashiering)-that nobody WANTS To work at a cash register, or in a factory, for the majority of their short life. We were not born or designed to do those tasks; they are social constructs and ultimately imo people deserve to spend their lives doing more of what they enjoy, and doing it when and how they want to.
Dad grew up during the Great Depression. As did mom. We were brought up to be frugal, save everything and care about making a living. All good things. I guess the back and forth in my mind is trying to do that, and also trying to do what would truly make me happier. Hard to find the balance point.
