oh, friend. i understand your feelings about hunting the emotional pit that opens up this time of year. i am trying to figure out how to turn my little bit of 40 acres into a deer sanctuary -- convince all the local deer to come here and hang out until hunting season is over.

If you grew field corn there I bet they'd come.

What about a project of roughly four months' duration? Or several, some even longer, of something/s you've wanted to do for, oh, the longest time, but just never structured the days and hours in which to actually undertake whatever it is?

I'm building some garden...I'm going to call it "equipment," since some of it will be trellises for tall runner beans and the like, and some arches which won't offend the municipality (or trigger a lonely, single busy-body, who lives halfway up the "block," to start policing things like whether your lawn is a quarter-inch taller than maximum----yes, that person does things like this---and then filing complaints with the officials, to do exactly that: "Màiri-dubh has an arch in her backyard garden that I'm SURE is an inch taller than six feet!" or, "...might not have built that properly and did she obtain a permit?") My plan is to make a number of these things modular so they can be varied in their configurations, as needed, and used differently from one gardening season to the next.

And---AND!---I ( ... )

That's true I can think of plenty of things to do.

Oh, yes. One can always think of plenty of things to do. There are always plenty of things to be thought of to do and a load of them are sitting in the kitchen right now and another load in the basement laundry area. The bathroom tub and sink could use a fresh scouring. They're not overdue, but I tend to get twitchy about sinks, tubs and toilets.

For me, it helps to have something to look forward to even if what I'm doing during the interim between now and the eventual arrival at my goal is only advancing the cause by a stage or two.

So, whatever it is, has to be something which energizes you, makes you eager to wake up and get cracking the instant you open your eyes in the morning.

Otherwise, it's a matter of just clenching one's jaw and gritting one's teeth and waiting for another day to pass and bring the breaking of winter's back that much closer.

O.K.: I'll be quiet, now.

Oh dear, that sounds grim. Are there other places you can go to walk, places that will have no hunters?

Have you had bad Christmas experiences, to give you such an anticipation of unhappiness?

I just can't go to my usual woodsy places to hike and walk during deer hunting season but I do know of other towny places I can go. I probably will...

Not really. The holidays just feel like an undercurrent of expectations that I can't live up to.

Your own expectations or that of others for whom you have to produce? If it's others, Maybe you can get those people to do some of the work or invite them to choose - they do it, or they do without.

Is there any part of it that you actually like? Maybe you could keep just the Christmas tree, or the family gifts, and toss out the Christmas dinner. Lots of Chinese restaurants open on Christmas. Or toss out the gifts. I know someone who hated gifts altogether and got everyone to agree on gift cards so it could all be done at the spinner rack in CVS.

What are the expectations you can't live up to? Your kids', the town decoration committee, your Xmas card list? We're old enough to chuck it all out, I think!

I feel the same way about the upcoming holidays - although for different reasons, since I don't have the hunting to contend with... I hope you can find something positive on the horizon! *hugs*

Oh, I'll keep marching onward. Just wanted to take a moment to complain a bit. :-)
