I know pretty much how you feel about turning loose of certain things.
I'm stuck with a boxful of my dad's old keepsakes. They don't mean anything to me because dad never talked about them but I can't get rid of them because he owned them either. {{{Sigh.}}}
My parents were two of the most closed-mouthed people I've ever encountered. Despite living with them until I was 33, I can't say I knew either of them that well if I go by all their little momento's and keepsakes.
One of my mom's highschool friends turned up at her funeral and during the short time we talked together, I found out more about my mom's life before she married than she ever told me herself.
And now I wonder what I'd find out if I'd ever managed to track down one or more of my dad's ex-girlfriends!
But all I'm left with are just a few old pictures without any names.
Tossing them into the trash feels kind of like I'd be letting go of another bit of the little that I had of him, you know.
sounds like you're making good progress on the basement. baby steps still get the job done! and not overwhelming yourself helps keep the motivation going.

maybe you could put the wooden blocks in a shadow box frame to display them. keep the memories, but give them a home on the wall. something like these https://www.amazon.com/extra-deep-shadow-box/s?k=extra+deep+shadow+box . i know joanns and michaels sell them too.
