blankets of snow - dead of winter

Yesterday Candy and I walked to the Kennerdell Lookout. It was cold - only about 5F. A windchill of 12 below. More so than the distance walked it was the cold that made me feel exhausted afterwards. When I got home I ate some hot soup and then slept for 2 hours.

Snow shapes.

Twigs and bumps.

Hemlocks.

Baby white pine.

Kennerdell and the Allegheny River. I took these with my phone and had no way to zoom in but the river had pancake ice floating on it. It was mesmerizing seeing the ice swirling in circles as it went along. But I really didn't want to stay long - it was even colder out on the edge of the hill. I was ready to start hiking back after a few minutes. Though it felt warmer going back to the car - all slightly uphill so my blood got heated up.

I didn't want to do much of anything today but putter around the house. The phrase "The Dead of Winter" keeps turning up when I talk about things. Somewhere I read that yesterday was "Blue Monday" - supposedly the most depressing day of the year (!). Tomorrow is the anniversary of the day my brother had his accident. I think that date has an big effect on me. Thinking about John a lot right now. It was very cold that year (1964) on this date. It can only get better from here. Time to just snuggle under the blankets and try not to think much.
