So I just got out of Russian. Today, being the first day back from what is meant to be a relaxing weekend, we had a simple assignment due--read articles from these Russian Life magazines over Midsemester Break and come back on Monday to report about anything interesting you learned about Russian culture ( Read more... )

Vinni Pux are deeply creepy--one of my good friends in high school was Russian and had watched them as a kid, and showed me a couple episodes. It's like winnie the pooh but with a deep, scratchy, creeper voice. Ya ne znala, chto toi uchish Russkii yazik...ya uchila v (high school, thus have forgotten most of what I knew :P)

I feel like knowing Russian composers and cartoons and so forth falls under random broad knowledge rather than depth in one topic. 16 years of piano instruction is another matter, but most don't have that. And think of it this way: you are learning breadth knowledge about Russia, while the people who already know it are somewhat wasting their time.

You've still got plenty of time to gain the specialization that most jobs are looking for--most freshmen, a quiet majority, come in being jacks-of-all-trades, and by senior year are specialists in their field.

(What I'm learning you learned in high school?) Heh, I don't know enough to make up for what you've forgotten yet, so that's okay. :)

I guess I should wait and see how my studies progress. I'll trust you, csawyer!

Ah, yes. I switched majors to Linguistics, so now I have a 2-course language requirement. Might as well learn language of the KGB. :P

I wouldn't worry too much about being good at one specific thing. In my opinion it is more fun to have a degree of breadth in what you are knowledgeable about rather than to have very specific knowledge with no breadth. Past experience tells me that if you have very specialized knowledge about something, it just makes you difficult to relate to, and you can only have a general conversation about the topic anyway.

Also, you are a really awesome person that has the ability to instill happiness in people who are feeling somewhat down, and you also make really awesome Pravdas.

Yey happiness! :) That's a good skill for sure.

Oh man, I need to make another Pravda? but I need content. HMM.
