"The New Victorians"

So this article reminded me a lot of another article that Sarah recently posted about how young people no longer have the resources to act like our irresponsible hippie parents did back in the 60's. Money quote:

“We came from these boomer parents who were very free love and change-the-world and made a lot of difference, but, in order to give us ( Read more... )

so odd that i've seen like 3 separate wile e. coyote references this week. i told you that i once wrote a letter to warner bros. concerning the plight of mr. coyote, right?

this was when i was like, 10 years old. my letter was like, to the president of warner bros. complaining that it was completely unjust and not credible for them to depict a supergenius like wile e. coyote continuing to fail spectacularly in his attempts to catch the roadrunner, who was obviously a hedonistic nitwit whose only two positive attributes were luck and speed. and i said that furthermore, by celebrating and elevating the roadrunner instead of the resourceful and indefatigable coyote, it sends entirely the wrong message to the children of america. i eventually got a response back from bugs bunny, saying that the coyote wasn't exactly as smart as he thought, and i wasn't giving enough credit to the road runner for his ingenuity. i was like, psh, whatever bugs.

I want to respond to this, because it has been a recurring theme here in Europe. But not when I am getting charged 2 euros for 30 minutes...

i agree to a high degree. also am very bothered by the lack of state/federal grant aid for graduate students right now--even with awesome grades, i get very little help from the government or the school, AND i even go to a state school, but i got so much money as an undergrad that i basically got $100,000 worth of education for the personal cost of maybe $6,000, but i think that people with graduate degrees likely go on to contribute a lot, so why is there no help getting us to that point of being able to contribute? lack of health insurance/affordable care is my second highest concern after that, but i expect to have it once i am able to start working within my actual career, a year from now. my school's health center offers a lot of things while i'm in school, but it's not cheap. anxiety is probably more a part of my personality than a product of circumstances, but i don't think my circumstances do anything to mitigate it ( ... )

I don't think it is an active decision to become more business minded. It's just the way the world is set up.

I'm finally going to be 100% on my own soon, and immedeately I will have to pay for health insurance, car insurance, my student loans, and probably more unseen bills. What am I supposed to do but find a job?

I was lj stalking and I came across your articles. Dear god, I have to give this to my friend. She just waxed on how she wants to be creative and poor.

This is not the first person that I hear who felt like she couldn't do both. However, I am not necessarily sure how it applies to me with my career as a scientist.
