Shaymin hoax followup

Quicker this time.

I linked my post in pokemon and it spread sufficiently fast from there. Everyone seems to know now. No, I didn't track it this time. Reactions are pretty much "I knew all along!!" and "oh lol PK got us AGAIN".

Also, Serebii is a little full of himself. Surprise ( Read more... )

Oh, of course. People totally knew it all along now that it's been revealed as a fake.

I don't know if I would call SPP/Pokebeach "journalism" at all... They're merely providing information. Journalism has certain rules, certain styles. I feel confident saying Bulbanews is journalism because I have an actual degree in the subject and am one year away from getting the next degree up, and I use what I have learned as much as I can when posting Pokémon news. If there's no source, then in most cases it's not getting posted.

Which is why you win three internets.

If they're going to have this stupid war over who's the coolest Pokemon news source then they should be acting like news sources, not pandering to whatever lands in their respective inboxes the most. They don't have to have degrees in it, either; things like "edit your crap" and "don't post tertiary hearsay of rumors" are not exactly deep journalistic secrets.

I knew it all along...
...that most of the "news" people who were rabidly convinced are completely useless idiots.

All the backpedaling and stumbling people are doing is fantastic though. A work of beauty to see everyone falling and tripping over themselves just to try and convince themselves they didn't fool themselves into believing something out of rabid fanboyism because of their over inflated sense of pride.

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

And for some reason, I fell in love with the word "themselves" in my post. Now I can't stand seeing it :P

Oh, and to the people who say I should not have posted it because there was no source...

I think it's more wrong to *not* post it. If you are going to run a news site about a hobby, it should be your obligation to always provide every little piece of news that gets released. Had I not covered this story, I would have failed the people who read my site. This sounds a little stupid, but I always try to cover everything and everything, rumor, unconfirmed, or not.

One more thing I wanted to say about "sources." Check all of the news stories on the front page. You will see that almost all of them have a source named when necessary or applicable. I usually *always* provide a source, unlike Serebii, who thinks he is a primary source to the community.

So, again, I think you guys are being a little harsh on me. I'm not infallible, as this event showed, but I also try to be as fair as possible. I'm not mean or a bully like Serebii, and I don't kill people so I can get stories. You guys are painting me out to be so mean when I really am not.

That's just it; there was no little piece of news. There was a picture on the Internet. That's all. Yes, it vaguely matches the description you had already posted, but.. surprise! So do three other independently-drawn pictures on DeviantArt. Everything about this "story" was completely invented by the Pokemon community. That is why I think this is absurd.

If you're going to run a news site about anything, you should probably filter the flotsam off of the front page before you have any reason whatsoever to think it's valid at all.

So you guys create this prank hoping everyone makes a fool of themselves, and then criticize me for posting about it? I'm sorry, but you can't have your cake and eat it. I did what I have always done - post news. I'm sorry if you can't understand that, but I suppose we have two very different ways of doing things.

And I don't understand your second paragraph.

Fansites not acting professional???? Say it isn't so.

Honestly if they just had big red flashing boarders around their updates like this that said "Rumor Mill" they might manage to avoid half of this. But I doubt they'll ever decide to source everything since they have so many secret sources of information they apparently need to keep private.

I do agree with most of this, but they meet most fansite standards as far as posting rumors go so I personally don't see it as that big of a deal.

Well, run this entry through an "Eevee has a big mouth" filter.
