Shaymin hoax followup

May 24, 2008 01:35

Quicker this time.

I linked my post in pokemon and it spread sufficiently fast from there. Everyone seems to know now. No, I didn't track it this time. Reactions are pretty much "I knew all along!!" and "oh lol PK got us AGAIN".

Also, Serebii is a little full of himself. Surprise ( Read more... )

Oh, and to the people who say I should not have posted it because there was no source...

I think it's more wrong to *not* post it. If you are going to run a news site about a hobby, it should be your obligation to always provide every little piece of news that gets released. Had I not covered this story, I would have failed the people who read my site. This sounds a little stupid, but I always try to cover everything and everything, rumor, unconfirmed, or not.

One more thing I wanted to say about "sources." Check all of the news stories on the front page. You will see that almost all of them have a source named when necessary or applicable. I usually *always* provide a source, unlike Serebii, who thinks he is a primary source to the community.

So, again, I think you guys are being a little harsh on me. I'm not infallible, as this event showed, but I also try to be as fair as possible. I'm not mean or a bully like Serebii, and I don't kill people so I can get stories. You guys are painting me out to be so mean when I really am not.

That's just it; there was no little piece of news. There was a picture on the Internet. That's all. Yes, it vaguely matches the description you had already posted, but.. surprise! So do three other independently-drawn pictures on DeviantArt. Everything about this "story" was completely invented by the Pokemon community. That is why I think this is absurd.

If you're going to run a news site about anything, you should probably filter the flotsam off of the front page before you have any reason whatsoever to think it's valid at all.

So you guys create this prank hoping everyone makes a fool of themselves, and then criticize me for posting about it? I'm sorry, but you can't have your cake and eat it. I did what I have always done - post news. I'm sorry if you can't understand that, but I suppose we have two very different ways of doing things.

And I don't understand your second paragraph.

She created a fake Pokemon just to see what would happen. I would have been downright impressed if everyone had held off for more information, like Argy and Filb did. In fact, if that had happened, this would have been even more of a success.

Don't put things on your front page if you're not sure about them. Toss them around in the forums, have a rumor mill somewhere, whatever. But if you're going to be a news site, then report on news. "Picture on the Internet more at 11" is not news. "Everyone falls for picture on the Internet" might be, I suppose.

In all fairness, I think those two didn't post about it because they are slow anyways. XD

Like I said, if something is a rumor, unconfirmed, etc., I will still post it because it could become news. I just do things differently - that doesn't mean my way is "wrong." The only thing I did wrong in this situation was at first posting it was real, and not looking into the source.

You didn't post news. You propagated rumor and hearsay. You posted news that was invented, without any source of information behind it. You run a rumor site, the Pokemon equivalent of TMZ or some other celebrity gossip site but with less panty shots of Paris Hilton.

Needs more panty shots of Gardevoir.

Saying I run a "rumor" site based on one news story is a little careless.

What matters in the end is what fans want. Sure, it's easy to be righteous and claim I shouldn't have done it (ironically from the people who wanted this to happen), but fans would have wanted the information posted. Fans would have thought afterwards, "Hey, why didn't they have that?" This just shows I try to post any developments in the Pokemon world, and that is news to me.

If you don't mind my asking, why?

From what I understand, the only reason that Serebii would post it would be to inform everyone :\

It was a rumor, and he noted it was one, and even said it probably wasn't real, so I don't understand why you can say this if he's just posting it :p
If it were real, he would have been "not up to date", which wouldn't fit with the image Serebii tends to have :\

Might I mention Mid 2006?
Ergo, may I mention the DP Starters? Or DP pokemon in general?
How many different versions of starters did people make right before DP came out?
And other various pokemon?

Frankly I don't understand how you criticize someone for trying to report what could be true.

So he is putting his LOL I AM FIRST rep amongst teenagers over accuracy, even when he doesn't think what he's posting is true at all.
There was absolutely nothing to indicate the Shaymin form was real; the "story" was entirely invented by the community.
He didn't provide a source either when announcing it or when saying it's a fake.

I'm just expecting a news site to act a little more like news and less like an gossip corner.

I don't know why anyone cares so much what I think of him, though; I've called him out on being painfully amateurish on pretty much every aspect of his site before and I'm always casually dismissed. His legions of frothing fans will continue to stick with him, he will continue to blow enough people to make sure he can post whatever he wants unsourced, and life will go on.

That's fine, then. But I do not pander to children. I have already edited the hell out of that post, and it does not need any more. And, really, the people who tell you to fuck off in the middle of four paragraphs are often the people you should most be listening to.

I posted this, then I posted on your forums, then I went to bed :V I haven't even seen any reply to me. My big nitpick there is that (a) a name link does not imply more information about the story without some significant hunting and (b) she churns out art pretty fast, so that picture is going to drop off her front page pretty quick.

You still got a Pokemon's name wrong. D:

I keep making you out as participating in a silly slapfight because you are. You argued about the posting with him on SPPF, several people have told me you have an informal war going on with him, not one single person besides you seems to disagree with my assessment, and you and Serebii have both approached PK asking her to do something that would give you a prank-related advantage over the

A prank-related advantage over Serebii? Okay... I love how people can twist things into being anything they want.

[12:16] PokeBeachWebsite: Next time you make a prank, can you please tell me? XD I will still support it, but I'd like to have some padding to it so I don't get killed by everyone who reads my site.
[12:16] SpottedFrird: I can't do that, I didn't post this with any intentions of fooling anyone, just seeing what happened on its own

Yeah, my intentions were /really/ aimed at trying to have an advantage over Serebii.

Serebii and I do have a war going on between each other, but for my purposes, it has to do with the way he treats me (as you clearly saw in the SPPf post). My main page has nothing to do with him, and the way I post is not influenced him by him in any way.

You wanted something he wouldn't have. He wanted something you wouldn't have. I call those advantages, yes.

I don't care about the details of your war; I am currently watching him say similar things about you, anyway. But if it makes you feel any better, I am way more interested in ragging on him than you.

Meh. I can see your point, but not every action I take is with Serebii in mind.

What's he saying about me? :p
