It depends on what you are looking for, but there are a lot of hosting companies. Unfortunately, most local ones are catering to corporate customers and tend to be in the higher price range. That's reasonable if you want someone to be able to answer a voice support call and hold your hand, but it's not cost-effective if you are not looking for that. I'm curious which "mom & pop ISP" you used to deal with that was bought out. A lot of local ISPs actually resold connectivity from other local ISPs.
You might have a look at Free Webs which, although not local, is well regarded. If you are very comfortable with Unix servers, consider Hurricane Electric. At a much higher price point, if you need whole servers, look at Interland (formerly Dialtone).
I've consulted for a number of local ISPs, so I need to be a little careful in what I suggest.
