On flooring, I can not recommend industrial grade vinyl tiles enough. Stuff is awesome. Damage one (or three) and you only have to pull up the damaged ones to replace. Goes down really easy too (at least on cement). They come in rubber and carpet too.
Yay glad to hear from you! Glad your grandmother is doing so much better - that's awesome! Good luck with the room renovating - laminate flooring is awesome, I wish I had that in my fuzz-coated critter house, lol (carpet! Tannish-cat-barf-colored carpet, thank goodness, but still!)

I got http://www.floorcity.com/Armstrong-J6213-Henna-LVT-Tile-18x18-p/armj6213.htm almost 8 years ago and it's still flawless except for the one seam my chair rolls over constantly for like 14 hours a day. It even survived a small flood (broken water pipe). Great stuff.
No clue on if that site is good; just used it to show. I got mine from the local Home Depot.

The pets are a factor in my choice, ngl. But laminate also doesn't closest crap that irritates my allergies, so double win!
