Clow couldn't sleep. And he wasn't the only one, but complaining on the journals felt like a waste of time. He was too irritated to interact with most people, anyway. He was beginning to think that the primary function of the journal was complaining about whatever ridiculous thing the Tree tended to inflict on people. Complaining didn't fix anything, though. And he was tired of lying in bed and staring at the ceiling. It'd be better to go out exploring again. There were still some places he hadn't seen, and sleeping past dawn was nearly impossible during normal circumstances, anyway ( ... )

There was someone here. She shifted her head a little, but didn't lift it. Above was sleepy. Not tired, really, but... comfortable.

Maybe if she didn't acknowledge whoever this was, they'd let her alone.

Oh, the creature had moved! So she was something alive.

Feeling a bit silly, he said, "Hello?"

He'd never seen something like this before. Maybe she was sentient. Maybe not. But he figured it might be important to know before he got too close.

Rats.

She picked her head up, neck drawing in an arc before her head actually lifted. Holding it straight up put her eye level at around six feet up. Which, she saw, hadn't really been necessary here; this boy was smaller than that. But it right now it seemed like too much effort to angle down.

< Yes, did you want something? > she asked.

With five days of solid sleep freshly behind him, Huo almost expected to forget what tiredness felt like entirely, but the Farm taught him better. Springtime made the living earth excitable and impatient, very much like a child in need of constant watch and guidance if one wished for a good harvest: work started before the first crack of dawn and demanded every shred of energy that the body had to give. Still a little stiff and unbalanced from five days flat on his back, Friday's rainy evening found him exhausted all over again, not to mention caked with mud. The hot springs were more than a good option: they seemed about the only option ( ... )

When it was dark, Above always found herself shutting down. It wasn't that darkness put her to sleep, exactly, but it made her extremely reluctant to move, and very inclined to inactivity. Sleep always soon followed, and when she woke in the night it was never complete.

She knew that feeling, knew that it had happened here, when there was plenty of light. Above's daytime naps were much lighter than this.

She'd meant to get up after Clow left, but the powerful lassitude of torpor had seized her. She was comfortable, and her body had seemed so heavy. Above had shifted position a little and settled again, wings half open like they were embracing the ground, and her head had lowered again. The tip of her beak was a little buried in pine litter.

Above slept, fingertips and eyelids sometimes twitching in vague dreams.

Asleep. It was impossible to resist... and if he were entirely honest, there was also the part of him that Above was so good at bringing out, which was to say the childish part. Certainly, giving her a bit of a scare would not be a virtuous thing to do, but then quite a lot of enjoyable things were not very virtuous.

He crept closer, subtle and silent, careful of sudden movements and cracking twigs, until he was close enough to brush against the great beak and get a good idea of what a wet pterosaur smelled like. With infinite care he started shifting the left wing a little to the side, trying to make more room between it and the padded ground.

Hopefully, if she did wake up and react, her reaction would not be to try to eat him.

Wet pterosaur, as it turned out, smelled of dead fish. Rather strongly, actually. Pterosaur that didn't have a fish lying heavy in her throat pouch smelled different, rather unlike any other animal.

She did not wake up. Air whooshed slowly in a steady, heavy rhythm from her nares. Breathing seemed to involve her whole body and something in her wing membranes, parts of which inflated just noticeably with each inhalation.

This close, drowsiness radiated out from her, making limbs and eyelids seem heavier. Something else was projected, too - a vague sense of falling.

Eagle had been taking naps when he could- it wouldn't help to be overtired and prone to mistakes- but he still wasn't at his best. That was his excuse for turning away from the path to the hot springs to get a better look at whoever that was- the shape looked familiar, like something he'd seen a while ago, but the memory was a little fuzzy.

Above was awake, now, and had finally gotten up. Now she was more or less sitting, looking up at the cloudy sky. Rain still dripped off leaves to the ground.

There was movement to one side. She turned her long head to get a look out of that eye. < I'm not gonna bite, you know, > she said.

He stepped out more clearly, and tilted his head to one side, considering. "I hope not, that would make a lot of trouble for both of us!" He offered a grin. "I don't think we've met up close before. Do you come down here often?"
