Maybe if she didn't acknowledge whoever this was, they'd let her alone.

Feeling a bit silly, he said, "Hello?"
He'd never seen something like this before. Maybe she was sentient. Maybe not. But he figured it might be important to know before he got too close.

She picked her head up, neck drawing in an arc before her head actually lifted. Holding it straight up put her eye level at around six feet up. Which, she saw, hadn't really been necessary here; this boy was smaller than that. But it right now it seemed like too much effort to angle down.
< Yes, did you want something? > she asked.

She knew that feeling, knew that it had happened here, when there was plenty of light. Above's daytime naps were much lighter than this.
She'd meant to get up after Clow left, but the powerful lassitude of torpor had seized her. She was comfortable, and her body had seemed so heavy. Above had shifted position a little and settled again, wings half open like they were embracing the ground, and her head had lowered again. The tip of her beak was a little buried in pine litter.
Above slept, fingertips and eyelids sometimes twitching in vague dreams.

He crept closer, subtle and silent, careful of sudden movements and cracking twigs, until he was close enough to brush against the great beak and get a good idea of what a wet pterosaur smelled like. With infinite care he started shifting the left wing a little to the side, trying to make more room between it and the padded ground.
Hopefully, if she did wake up and react, her reaction would not be to try to eat him.

She did not wake up. Air whooshed slowly in a steady, heavy rhythm from her nares. Breathing seemed to involve her whole body and something in her wing membranes, parts of which inflated just noticeably with each inhalation.
This close, drowsiness radiated out from her, making limbs and eyelids seem heavier. Something else was projected, too - a vague sense of falling.

There was movement to one side. She turned her long head to get a look out of that eye. < I'm not gonna bite, you know, > she said.
