Bastet had seen the signs on her way in to work, and the idea had her snickering all morning. So of course there was no way she was missing this, and as soon as she got a break for lunch, she headed straight over.

Since the weather had gotten so hot, she'd taken to pulling her hair into a long, fat braid that slapped against the small of her back with every step. A pair of purple shorts she'd cut from some leggings left her long legs bare, and her white tank exposed her arms--while she still got attention, it was much more subdued than it had been since that last guy had tried to grope her. Word got around, it seemed.

She grinned and waved as the two came into sight. "Yo!" she called. McQueen didn't really have much of a chance with her against Argent--loyalty ensured that, if nothing else. But hey; he didn't need to know how biased she was.

Bastet stopped in front of them with a grin of pure, arrogant challenge. "I've been looking forward to this all morning," she drawled. "So don't disappoint me."

Oh, this should be

Argent smiled, delightedly, when he saw Bastet approaching. It wasn't just delight at seeing someone who he knew he had something of an immediate advantage with, however; he was also glad to have the chance to warm up with someone he knew a little better, someone who reactions he could, perhaps, not predict but at least have a sense of where the boundaries lay. He stepped forward, giving a brief daring glance over his shoulder to McQueen, as if saying just try to best me here, and scooped up Bastet's hand, bringing it to his mouth and giving it a quick, dry kiss before beaming at her.

"Bastet, my darling," he said, making his eyes very wide, "it is my pursuit in life never to disappoint you, so I do hope this proves a pleasant experience for you. If there is anything I might do to make it more pleasant, you need only ask." He gave her hand a quick squeeze and then let it go, sweeping a hand over to McQueen. "This is my compatriot and competitor, Mr. McQueen." He gave another bright smile, though this time it was teasing and secretive ( ... )

McQueen stared at Argent for a several seconds, trying to make sense of how a guy could possibly talk like that normally.

It was clear Argent was more acquainted with Bastet then he was, and it wasn't as if he hadn't noticed the notes they left each other in the journals. Rolling his eyes at Argent after Argent finished his lavish introduction, he turned to Bastet, moving between the two so Argent was blocked off.

"Hey," he smiled, "first time meeting in person, right? Wow, I have to say you are making me change my mind about this retarded competition. Seeing you I think it might actually be fun." He held out his hand to Bastet.

Bastet raised an eyebrow, grin firmly in place as Argent kissed her hand--he was clearly taking this seriously. "Mm," she said, tapping his cheek with a finger. "Really, Argent, when have I ever held back about wanting something from you?"

She almost laughed out loud at the look on McQueen's face, then did actually snicker as he moved between her and Argent. "I'm all for fun, but don't think I'm here to make it easy," she said, her grin widening as she looked up at him. Hell, everyone was so much taller than her--it was ridiculous. She shook his offered hand, her grip firm and dry. "Am I the first one?"

around 2:00pm over here! a_missing_piece August 4 2008, 19:55:03 UTC
Piece was making her way through the Marketplace. After finishing up for the day--why yes, her hours were quite flexible--she had gone off to buy what her dinner would consist of: a load of bread, a pre-smoked fish, and some radishes she was planning on boiling. Such a venture was Decidedly Difficult™--mostly because of her short stature and everyone's else's not-so-short stature. Crowds of people pulsed around her, people who didn't even notice her presence--to say the least, it was extremely difficult to squeeze herself through and dodge carts and other strange things.

Though, she was getting used to it. This wasn't her first visit to the Marketplace after all. Finally, she paused--a strange sign catching her attention. What's a 'Charm-Off? Sounds kind of lame. Nonetheless, being slightly interested in what this might entail, she made her way through the crowds until she arrived at where the so-called Charm-Off was supposed to take place ( ... )

Something caught McQueen's attention out of the corner of his eye. His scowl quickly changed to wide grin when the girl approached him.

He turned to face her, his grin still glued to his face. "Hey," he said while crouching down a little, attempting as best as he could to not intimidate her.

"You've seen the signs I bet? Stupid sounding, eh? Mr. Lame-o over there put them," McQueen said pointing his thumb in Argent's direction.

With his eyes sparkling; a trick that he learned he could do, McQueen reached out his hand, "My name's McQueen. What's yours?" he said.

"Yeah. The signs pointed over here, and I thought I'd check out what was going on," Piece replied, physically leaning over to get a better view at who Mr. Lame-o was. She hadn't heard of anyone named Lame-o over the journals, though if the man she was speaking with was McQueen, as he claimed, then supposedly his rival or opponent, or whatever word was more appropriate for a 'Charm-Off' supposedly was Mr. Argent, Throne's freeloading roommate. Was Mr. Argent even around then? Who was Mr. Lame-o, the event's official advertiser? Ah, maybe she'd find that out later ( ... )

McQueen's smile widened further when she shook his hand, "Piece, that's a very pretty name, rolls off the tongue nicely," he said.

"Well Piece, you get to choose which person you find more charming, and the way you do that is by putting something in the that has the name of the person you choose labeled on it." McQueen pointed to the two jars, "It's just a little bet me and Argent have going, nothing serious."

McQueen sniffed the air, he could smell something delicious coming from the bag Piece was holding, "Planning on cooking something delicious? I bet you are a great cook." He smiled at her again.

What the heck is a 'Charm-Off'? Sight wondered to himself as he wandered through the Marketplace. He'd decided to head in and make his usual visits to his friends who worked there when he saw a few of the fliers posted about. Interesting.

While he'd met Argent and heard a little about him from Bastet (weren't they supposed to train him together? So many things to do, and so little time!), he didn't really know the guy or this McQueen character either. But the masked man figured that he might as well check it out, whatever it was. Maybe he'd be charmed, maybe he wouldn't.

Not that he had any idea what he was getting himself into as he approached their spot in the Marketplace.

Argent spotted Sight out of the corner of his eye, just as he and McQueen were finishing bickering over Bastet's final verdict. His eyebrows went up for a moment, as he did a quick mental calculation over whether or not this one was more in his favour or not and then smiled slyly at McQueen. "Frying pan to fire, my friend. Think you can keep up?" he muttered and then turned around in a very fast spin and trotted over to their newest guest.

"Sight, old sock," he said in a loud, friendly voice, "it is good to see you again. It has been much, much too long, and all the promises I hear of seeing you again keep seeming to evaporate." He clapped the man on the shoulder and mock-sighed. "But I hear you have been having some boisterous times, so I shall excuse you. Are you here to take part in our little event?" He twiddled his fingers in McQueen's direction to indicate who the other half of "our" was.

Looked like his acquaintance Argent was quick for the kill, while the other still had yet to approach him. Old sock--oh yeah, his hair. He remembered that Bold pulled something similar, but with hair as silver as his own, he was an easy target to poke fun at and call an old fart. Not that he took the issue seriously, although a strong desire to correct Argent did bubble up from somewhere within him.

He would've interjected and explained the manner of his recent disappearing acts, but Argent pretty much had the ball rolling. Well, that didn't stop him from being curious about the event and exactly what it entailed. With a glance toward the other, he finally replied, "Ah, this little event, eh? Hn, what exactly is this so-called 'charm-off' that you two have set up?"

McQueen walked over casually when Argent started pointing at him.

"Hey," he said interrupting the two and then paused realizing that the person Argent was speaking to was a guy, "Uh...I'm McQueen. You've come to watch I'm assuming?"

McQueen put his hands in his pockets, suddenly rather awkward, he hadn't thought of the possibility that he might have to hit on some men.

So when Throne first heard about this charm-off idea, late one night when him and Argent had been talking, he had -- admittedly -- laughed so hard that he'd fallen off of the couch and knocked his head. The thought of Argent and McQueen locked in a knock-down, drag-out battle of charm sounded like it could quite possibly be the greatest thing ever, and although it was clear to everybody in a five mile radius that Throne was biased as they got, it still didn't keep him from finding his way down to the Marketplace after getting off shift earlier that afternoon ( ... )

McQueen spun around, he didn't recognize the guy but it was clear they had talked before.

"We're still debating that," McQueen muttered, glaring at Argent's back, currently distracted by something else.

McQueen whiped some of the sweat of his neck, and peeled off a shirt he was wearing, he didn't know why he always wore some many layers. He looked back the guy, "have you come to join in the fun?"

Argent looked up from re-tallying, for the fourth time, the current results, and he immediately dropped what he was doing to clap his hands. Walking over to where McQueen and Throne were standing, he dusted market-dust off his pants and then clapped his hands.

"Throne!" he said. "It has been a great deal of fun so far. If I could only find a way to make a regular income from such things, perhaps I would not be such a layabout." He made his eyes very wide and looked at Throne with a half-pleading, half-teasing smile. "Do say you have come to join!"

There was a beat where Throne didn't answer just tilted his head to one side and looked at McQueen, eyebrow quirked, momentarily distracted by -- well -- McQueen. The smirk on his face grew slightly more lopsided as one corner of his mouth pulled even higher as his eyes gave a short wander and then slid slide-ways over to Argent.

Okay, so this clear-cut decision? Suddenly not so clear-cut.

"Ah, well," he then said, with a small shrug, as soon as his brain decided to play catch-up. "I just couldn't resist. You know me, G, always one for a bit of charm." He leaned forward towards Argent and mimicked his smile -- at least the teasing part. "Though I must say," he said and turned his face towards McQueen, "looks like the competition is fierce."

3:00PM! You two are my heroes. novagravitation August 4 2008, 23:29:57 UTC
It was not a good idea to run in this heat, Nova thought miserably to herself as she finally had to stop and catch her breath. Shaking small droplets of sweat off her face and rubbing her forehead with a sleeve (why, why was she wearing something with sleeves), she stopped in the middle of the marketplace and looked around for a drink stall, or a tree with some shade. After getting chocolate all over her apron at work, Nova had realized that she'd left her spare at home, so she was on her way there now, and would've been there by now, if the rotten heat hadn't stopped her!

It had been going for four days now with no signs of stopping.

Nova's eyes cast about frantically, but instead of finding water, she spied two figures who may or may not have been bickering. Curious, Nova moved closer and smiled to see what one of them was Argent. After their conversation the other day, she'd wanted to say hello and see him again. Beside him was the other young man, and beside him was a sign. Nova blinked after reading it. So this other person ( ... )

"Miss Nova!" Argent cried, giving a half-second worth of grin to McQueen before rushing over and taking her hand and lifting it as if he was going to kiss it. He stopped at the last second, though, and simply smiled over-top of it at her. Giving her hand a little shake, he shook his head as well, tugging her near so that he could brush hair off her face. "My dear girl," he said, "what are you doing rushing about on a day like today? You could make yourself quite ill and then what would I do with myself?"

He released her hand finally and stepped back, gesturing to McQueen, and laughing. "Are you here to participate in our little competition? It is quite straightforward. All you need do is allow us to charm you and then place a small donation in the jar of the person you found more charming. Simple, isn't it? Are you interested?"

McQueen couldn't stop himself from rolling his eyes, again.

"Yeah, I am actually," he called to Nova over Argent's shoulder, "Do you want see it up close?"

McQueen walked over beside her, "It awesome to be able to finally talk to you face to face. And it's even more awesome to finally put a face to your name, especially since you're so pretty." He smiled and his eyes sparkled.

Nova raised her eyebrow at Argent. And then she laughed because she hardly ever raised her eyebrow at anyone! "Argent," she said, tone very mock-serious. "You're sort of a tease. Has anyone ever told you that before?" Her pout then curled up helplessly into a grin as she playfully tugged the curl right back from him and put it behind her ear. Looking beyond to where Argent was gesturing, she could see their little stand with the two jars each marked with their names. "Charm me??" She looked back at Argent with a rather perplexed expression. "How do I know if I feel charmed? Or...more charmed??"

Nova turned her smile to McQueen, who was now standing beside her, blushing slightly over the compliment. "I would, actually! Very much! To see if it's cursed! And t-thank you!" She stammered. "Very much...You're pretty too!" She blinked and waved her hands. "Umm...you know...for a man."
