Considering Drake's choice in occupation, Fugue wasn't all that surprised that the boy hadn't been down there much. Nor was it much surprise that the other had only seen a few of the places The City Without Walls had to offer--it was truly a large realm, and places such as the library or other islands weren't readily accessible. He ignored the first question, the one asking about the miracle. It was something that could be explained later, after all. But Fugue nodded in response to Drake's other question. "Really." Oh now this had just skewed way off into the realm of the totally fascinating. The oak tree itself was what made the journals and THAT was why they did their thing? So in theory...he'd think more about this later. There was a lot to ponder there, and it set off a whole domino effect of thoughts. So much to slot into his puzzle, so many new pieces ( ... )

Fugue nodded, idly wondering if the machines added any special qualities to the paper... Not being able to conjure up some answer, he decided that their brief stop at the paper factory was over. Drake's eyes narrowed very, very slightly when Fugue wasn't looking at him. That went against one of the major things he'd been told about the journals, that he'd told hatchlings over and over; they never ran out of pages. So how could ( ... )
