Bazaar, afternoon. burntorangesky November 2 2009, 19:58:23 UTC
A short time after noon, Fred finally gave in to the restless feelings. She was tired of just sitting here with nothing to do but think, and occasionally talk to anyone who could spare a moment from his or her busy schedule or learn to play cards from Cross. Not that Fred wanted someone with her constantly, that would be annoying, but nothing to do meant that there was nothing to distract her from thinking. About everything she could have done, and didn't; about everyone who died. About the nightmares ( ... )

A lifetime ago it seems, the marketplace was Apple's favorite place in the entire Sphere. Not only was it the place where all the food ended up, it was also the center of activity for their community ( ... )

As Fred approached Apple, she saw an odd yellow... creature? on his head. It was the thing singing, and it disappeared after dropping some pancakes in front of the black-haired child. Fred blinked. That was a bit odd.

It looked like Edensphere was getting back to its old tricks. She yelped in surprise as the sentient banana-thing apparently decided she was its next target. She tugged at its... limbs for a moment with her good hand, then just let it sit there and sing when her efforts just made it cling tighter and sing more loudly.

It disappeared eventually, leaving her with a plate of pancakes. She looked at them a bit warily, then approached the child. Perhaps his animals would appreciate these more than she would.

"Hello. My name is Fred."

The smile turned into more giggles as Nannerpuss decided to sing to Fred next. She looked more than a bit startled and she left her pancakes on the floor. If she wasn't careful the strays were going to get to it. Scruffy and Lemon were almost finished with his and Taters the brown tabby was starting to edge his way towards the second plate.

Fred. Apple knew Fred. She was the one who talked a lot on the journals--often with the medic, Roswell. He nodded.

"'M Apple."

He still wasn't saying much, but it was better than the catatonic state he'd been in during and immediately after the fire.

"Yeah, yeah, and you love pancakes," Eyepatch grumbled, and then the banana-puppet thing and all its flailing peels disappeared. Pancakes were the closest thing to a real fresh meal he'd had since the fires, so really, he wasn't complaining about the bizarre little price that came with it.

He turned around, the fork hanging out of his mouth, and eyed the section he'd called home just a week before. Specifically, his attention fell to the empty spot that he and Zombie's crappy excuse for a house stood.

Eyepatch really only planned to take a quick-breakfast-break then get back to work for the Bossman, however, a small tuft of dark hair ended up catching his attention. "Yo, Little Dude." He hadn't actually seen him since the incident. "What're you up to?"

Apple was actually wearing a smile as he wandered through section one, cooing gently for reluctant strays and scattering bits of dried jerky for them. Nannerpuss' silly song was echoing throughout the area and it was hilarious to watch everyone's reactions to the banana.

Then the child heard a voice he hadn't heard since before the fire. He looked up sharply, his smile growing wider even if he didn't actually say anything. Eyepatch. He was alive!

He didn't run--he had a kitten napping in his pocket and he didn't want to disturb her--but he sure as hell shuffled over to the older man and wrapped skinny arms tightly around him. He sniffed and buried his face into Eyepatch's shirt. He probably wasn't going to let go anytime soon.

His eye widened. Holding his plate out to side, he just stared down at the top of Apple's head silently a moment. Eyepatch didn't need to ask him why because he already had a pretty good idea. Nevertheless, he couldn't help feel a bit awkward and unaccustomed to such affection.

He chuckled quietly, setting the fork down on his balanced plate before giving the child a small pat on the head. "Yeah... It's good to see you too."

Apple nodded fiercely and clung tighter. He didn't cry--he was finally, after a week, out of tears--but he sniffled a bit more and nuzzled his friend. He smelled of cigarettes and maple syrup. It was a nice smell.

The kitten that was in his pocket--Patchy--began to stir as she catch a whiff of the pancakes.

"Mew?"

A tiny pink nose poked its way out of the oversize grey coat someone had found for Apple. Someone was hungry.
