Kiba was mostly silent on the way up, determined to keep his eyes and ears focused on his surroundings. If Snap and Bastet had been taken by surprise, then it was all the more reason to stay sharp ( ... )

Blood knew that she was only allowed to come along because she had promised Kazahana that she would listen to her and Kiba, and not do anything reckless. Due to that, she was being incredibly careful, not running ahead, and constantly glancing at the others to make sure she wasn't overstepping her bounds ( ... )

Range followed behind all of the others, absently listening for any other noise outside of their own footsteps and the sounds they made while moving through the tree. He had put on his plainest clothes and taken the rifle Raise had given him before going to meet with the others, and as they traveled he could feel his thoughts mixing together, becoming almost incoherent. Should he have come? Everyone seemed to have expected it; it felt like the right thing to him ( ... )

Kazahana drew her own sword, more nervous than she had been at any moment leading up to this. She knew she'd been a fighter, she remembered fighting and fragments of battles, but this was the first test within the sphere. But she couldn't second-guess herself now, and not just for the sake of those who had come with her. She had to see this through for Bastet's sake ( ... )

"Holy fuck," Kiba said, disgusted. Two of them, plus eggs and hatched young? Four people was starting not to look like enough.

But four was what they had, and they'd have to do.

The two big spiders were coming straight for them, moving fast enough that it was easy to see how they'd taken two seasoned warriors by surprise.

"Howl, Zabimaru!" He reached back, snapping his sword forward. The sections of the sword stretched out, the serrated edges slicing through the bough in front of the spiders, throwing up dirt and bark and bringing them up momentarily short.

His weapon was best used to keep the enemy at a distance, and he'd do just that until his comrades got their bearings.

"Shit, watch out for the little ones!" They probably had venom too, right? Even the babies were big as shit.

"Hey, you said a bad wo..." Blood heard what Kiba said before she noticed the spiders, but when she did her voice cut off quickly ( ... )

Range had just enough time to notice the sheer amount of spiders before he was grabbing for the rifle, running up the branch as space opened up and sliding down on one knee, bringing the gun up and aiming for the nearest baby spider. He pulled the trigger when he thought he found a weak spot; as it reeled he shot again, the sounds of battle and the others calling out relegated to the background. Did he have enough bullets? He had brought a whole set of cartridges.

It'd have to do.

"I'll try and handle the smaller spiders!" He shouted, peering through the sight of the gun and shooting at another baby spider as he saw it scuttling toward their general area. It was only after he shot two more that he looked up from his position, just in case anything had managed to sneak up on him. The sounds of the others fighting hit him, and once he had made sure his immediate spot was safe he turned his full attention back to the task at hand, ignoring how his vision irritated him. Now, of all times?

"I'm not giving you any mercy."

Range and Kiba had the advantage of distance attacks; that was good. Kazahana didn't, at least when it came to physical weaponry, but that didn't matter. Getting up close and personal with the thing that had killed Bastet and Snap was fine with her ( ... )
