------
The prison cell was circular, dank and dark, the concrete walls unadorned. In the middle was a cage, also round, containing an alien prisoner, dressed in simple clothing, who sat in a chair at a plain desk. The desk had a stack of notebooks on top of it. The prisoner had his clawed hands clasped together in front of him and appeared to be waiting for something. Then, a tall young man with dirty blond hair, dressed in a blue and gray uniform, came in through the door behind the prison cell. He wore dark sunglasses that completely covered his eyes, and two of the badges on his uniform were covered with black tape.
"I'm here, Mirloc. Just like I said I'd be," said the young man.
"Your integrity is to be commended," said the alien.
"No small talk," said the young man. He spoke in a terse manner and seemed nervous as he paced around the cell. "I don't wanna be here any longer than I have to be. Now what is it you want for your collection?" He turned and faced the wall, pursing his lips.
"I collect memories. Sad memories," said Mirloc.
"What?"
"In exchange for the information I gave you, you must tell me your worst memory," said Mirloc. As he spoke, the young man turned to face him again and paced several steps.
"No. Forget it," he snapped in return, turning to face the wall, shaking his head.
"We had a deal, Ranger," said Mirloc simply. The young man hesitated, glancing back at the prisoner, then pressed his lips together. When he spoke, his voice was quiet and a little strained.
"… My dad was a Power Ranger, too," he began. As he spoke, the scenery abruptly changed to a park, but everything seemed strange- sepia-toned. A young boy, no more than 4 or 5 years old and dressed in black shorts and a red, white and black-striped shirt, chases after a baseball rolling across the grass. Then, the young man's voice was heard narrating- this is a flashback, and the Ranger is the child within it.
"He was the Red Ranger. He was a great father, but he made a vow to protect the innocent." The little boy approached his parents, a woman with blond hair dressed in a skirt and blouse, and a brown-haired man dressed in a tan uniform with red and black stripes, with the letters "S.P.D." across the back. The man is carrying a baseball bat. The little boy watches unhappily as his father pats him on the head
"When people were in danger, he was always ready to fight." The man in the S.P.D. uniform smiled and waved back at his wife and son before running off. Suddenly, the scene changed to an urban area. Now wearing a red, white and black uniform made of Spandex, complete with a red helmet, the father seen before leads frightened and screaming people away from the scene of an apparent battle. Explosions go off behind him as he does so.
"One day, he got the call. They say he saved dozens of people. He fought until the bitter end."
There is another scene change within the flashback. This time, the little boy and his mother are sitting on a bench outside a building, which has the letters "S.P.D." on the side. A man in a black uniform walks out of a glass door and approaches the boy and his mother.
"It was his last battle." The man handed the little boy his father's helmet, now charred and melted in places and covered in black leather. As the flashback fades to the present, the narrator's voice begins to quaver. "I never saw him again..."
The blue-uniformed young man is facing the wall, fighting back tears and sniffling.
"What a horrible memory," said Mirloc. I can only imagine how hard that was for you."
"I'll never forget it," said the young man quietly.
"Of course not," Mirloc replied, then stood up, bracing himself on the table. "Thank you, Ranger. That's the most amusing story I've heard in years!"
"… what?" the young man whispered, disbelieving, turning to face the alien. His lip was trembling.
"Oh yes. I have to admit, I've heard some sorry tales, but yours is truly one of the saddest. It will be the most treasured in my collection."
"You…" Enraged, showing his teeth, the young man raised his fist then slammed against the cell bars, wrapping his hands around them. "YOU'RE A MONSTER!"
"You think?" cackled Mirloc.
A single tear slid down the young man's cheek from underneath his sunglasses. Mirloc's eyes flashed, and with a satisfied sigh, he disappeared within it. The tear dropped to the floor with a "plip".
The young man removed his sunglasses, revealing that his eyes were red and watery. He stared at the empty cell in shock as he realized what had happened, before the memory faded.
