1. It is TOO DAMN COLD. That is all.

2. Also, BW is apparently ill. MS and I agreed that he could/should leave work early (me because I don't want him getting so ill I have to cover his shifts, MS because she prefers not to work with him, and both of us because it was a slow day), so he punched out at 2:30pm. I hope he's better tomorrow ( Read more... )

reviews, work: smoke shop, religious education, fandom: merlin, ithaca local, unitarian universalist, squee

Your reaction to BBC Merlin scarily mirrors mine. Like, almost exactly. It's uncanny. Because, yes, the characters are SO DUMB sometimes, yet SO ADORABLE, and I find myself (slightly to my nerdish horror) not giving two figs about historical accuracy when I watch this thing. :D

The show is kind of like a huge, adorable puppy, you know? Sometimes it trips over its own feet, and sometimes it pees in the house and you kind of put your hand over your eyes and wonder why you bought the damn creature... and then it wriggles and bounces around the room and cuddles on your lap and looks at you with huge, melting eyes and you just go all gooey and forgive it for everything.

Which was a better analogy in my head, but whatever. <3

Also, here is a really interesting post about various versions of Arthurian legend and how Merlin, while clearly giving Malory the finger, is actually drawing on elements from other versions that have faded from current popular consciousness. (This still does not excuse the tomatoes and sandwiches and so on, but then again, Malory was writing as if fifth century Britain were patterned on high medieval society, complete with France next door [when France, as such, did not exist!] so historical inaccuracy is a long and noble tradition when dealing with legends. *grin*)

I keep hearing about Merlin. But I still haven't watched it. Eh, maybe later...

It's deeply silly in many ways, but there's some good stuff underneath the silliness, and it's a very FUN sort of silly. :-)

Merlin is a giant AU! So historical accuracy no longer matters asdfjkl; it's the only way I justified it to myself

Yes, I figure if they're calling Britain 'Albion,' (and also if magic is real), we have left the realms of strict historical fiction and tiptoed off into some version of fairyland. And who's to say that this alternate-reality version of England doesn't have tomatoes as a native plant, eh? ;-)
