When I can surpass even Queen Metalia, I'll be free. She'd said that to this boy, to Uchiha Sasuke. It was an admission she'd never said plainly, not once, before that. Somehow this boy, who already knew her so well because they were so similar, she could say it to him ( ... )

When she had come close enough, he slipped from the branch to the ground with ease. Sasuke wasn't going to think anymore on the reasons why; the things that he had been feeling, and thinking, and doing. Right now there was none of that. There was Mercury and her desire to get stronger (and possibly a snake in proximity). That was all ( ... )

She had only the very vaguest suspicion a snake might be near. Something was nagging at her mind, the sort of feeling they say you get when someone's talking about you, but she did not in fact quite sense a presence and certainly saw nothing and eventually dismissed it as her imagination. Alone, she would have investigated it more thoroughly, but here it was unlikely to harm her. Unless, Mercury considered, it was a surprise Sasuke had in store for their training. Well. She would simply be sure to be alert.

Mercury, too, had been trained harshly. That man had been stern, inflexible.

'Kunzite! You could have broken my wrist that time!' A furious look.
'Then pay attention.' Utter calm; not a twitch of sympathy or hint of relaxation.
'I was!' Insistent.
'Then how did I hit you?' The same calm, the mouth forming a derisive smile.
And she could only fume silently.Yes, that was easily why she had made the progress she had; it had been necessary. So now she was ready, already in a challenge position that could not be mistaken ( ... )

It was no suprise: the snake. He wouldn't be trouble, certainly. Orochimaru following to watch them train was almost a logical assumption. He would know before Orochimaru even tried to do anything. The slight advantage of being 'connected,' as it were now. The comsumption of Orochimaru's chakra and slight merging actually helped Sasuke in a good amount of ways. It made him heal faster. It helped him with sensing presences. That was one are Sasuke lacked in greatly; and had greatly improved due to this ( ... )

Azula had been anxious to see what was happening in this battle. So far, she'd mostly seen Mercury fight weaker opponents, although she had to admit that the Water peasant girl had been GOOD. She had expected no less from the girl who had almost defeated her, and how much better she'd gotten in that fight with Mercury. Neither had it escaped Azula's notice that Aang had learned Fire Bending and even better Earth Bending. She had admitted to know exactly how angered Azula was by the fact that she had been pulled before them, and therefore were given a chance to get better. They were not killed ( ... )

The single acanthophis slithered it's way through the grass, observing the match with pale, yellow eyes, following the graceful movements of each opponent with interest. They were like dancers, moving in lines against and with one another, forming a beautiful tapestry of art that glided across the field.

If snakes could smile...

It listened to the quiet voices afterwards, this exchange much different than that of fists and bodies that had taken place previously, but it spoke of a bond all the same. As Sasuke revealed his gift for the blue-haired girl, the snake lifted it's head ever so slightly in recognition.

It waited until there was nothing left to be said, until words disappeared and faded into silence, and slowly slithered away.
