With his leg suitably bound and bandaged, Jing climbed to the top floor of the second apartment building and then exited the door that led to the roof. He still moved with a significant limp and probably would for at least days to come, but the conflicted expression on his face had nothing to do with his injury. Instead it was focused on the still figured hunched against the chill wind on the rooftop ahead of him.

"No stars up there to wish our way out of here on, right?" he said as he approached, choosing his footing carefully amid the icy patches.

Atem's sharp ears had long warned her of his approach, and she twisted around, giving him a wry grin. "Not a one. I haven't even seen one constellation that I recognise." She sighed and looked up at the sky, while an unbidden tear slid down her cheek.

"I would steal one and bring it to you," Jing said, lowering himself into a sitting position with a faint grimace of pain, "but I'm not feeling terribly light on my feet tonight."

Once he had settled, he was able to see her clearly, and dismayed to find tears on her pretty face. His joking tone evaporated immediately. "Hey, hey," he said quietly. "No need for that. All's well that ends well, right?"

Atem tried to laugh at Jing's joke, but it turned into a partial sob instead. "What's going to happen now?" she asked in a small voice.
