Shadow nodded at her explanation, and moved his hand-come-heater and light a little closer to her. It was oddly nice to talk to her - or, at least, listen; he didn't feel like doing much talking. But Tohru had always reminded him of Maria, with how kind and gentle she was, and although it hurt to be reminded of her now that she was gone, it was also nice in some way he didn't really understand. Comforting, perhaps. She couldn't fill that void - and clearly, didn't fully understand it, judging by how upset she was that he'd ignored her in order to look after Maria in the last days she was here in the compound. But he supposed he couldn't expect her to. Nobody really could ( ... )

He shot her a sharp look, ears back. Why would she mention leaving in such a public area? Anyone could be listening in; absolutely anyone could have heard that, which would be a recipe for certain disaster.

But as quickly as he'd given her the look, his expression returned to neutral. He couldn't make too big a deal of it, or if indeed there was someone listening, they might decide that yes, her words had indeed meant they had a planned escape, as opposed to thinking that perhaps she'd just meant the general sort of leaving-by-chance that many were subject to here.

"Thanksgiving," he repeated aloud. "Isn't that a UF holiday?" They'd celebrated it, or something like it, on the ARK, the scientists and their families. But Tohru was Japanese, wasn't she? Maybe there had been talk of it on the communicator network; he hadn't been paying attention to anything that wasn't immediately interesting to him.

"Mm." That made sense. From what he'd gathered, the America of many worlds that were represented in Econtra was the equivalent of the United Federation in his own world. And hadn't he gotten to know Tohru thanks in part to a feast of some sort in the fall? It must have been their Thanksgiving. Either he'd never known that detail, or he'd just forgotten by now. It had been a year, after all. A lot had happened, and the details of earlier events were fuzzy at times.

"I'd asked about your mother, after being unable to find the photo," he recalled. "I'll be there."

He would allow her that one thing, the dinner she was planning. That was acceptable. The day after, or perhaps even that night, they would leave. Shadow wasn't sure how much more of this place he could take.
