Erk sat down across from her. Her appearance had been surprising; for one thing, he hadn't seen anyone with blue hair since leaving Elibe, where it was actually a fairly common hair color (then again, so was purple). More surprising than that, though, was the fact that it looked like she was younger than he was.

He nodded. "Hello, Mercury."

She'd gotten used to the variance in appearances in Econtra, and likely so had Erk by now. She recalled he'd been in the strange world for some time now, as she had. Mercury gave her soon-to-be opponent a brief mischievous grin.

"It's only fair to tell you, I won't lose easily," she said. "And I won't go easy on someone." Not in chess, and that was a large factor of why she'd wanted to play. There would be no hesitation, no uncertainty, no doubts or emotions clouding judgment. There would be clarity. Surety. However, the blue-haired girl also had no intention of underestimating the boy across from her, for all that he appeared roughly in his teen years just like her.

The two sides of the match were detailed by the ice itself: brilliantly clear on one side, and a clouded or frosted appearance on the other. She let Erk choose his side.

"White or black?"

"Nor will I," Erk replied levelly.

The mage hesitated for a moment. "Black," he said finally. It would be easier to see how she played and react accordingly that way.

"I'm glad," Mercury commented easily. "I like it that way." Always the drive for a satisfying match, one where both sides went all out, where top form was necessary to win.

There was a minute, almost unnoticeable pause before she nodded. The board was already turned to put them in the right positions, so she left it untouched.

She was good. Mercury played in an aggressive style that seemed to suit her usual temperament, even from the opening. She took her time, took few chances, and worked to slowly build up her side's defenses even as she focused primarily on her main offensive.
