You can always count on Olympic opening ceremonies to provide perplexing, pointless, not-necessarily-effective spectacle.

Except this one.  Wow.  Wow!  There was pretty much nothing to make fun of -- okay, except for the Chinese cheerleaders dancing to bagpipes playing "Scotland the Brave" while the Turkish team marched in -- and so much to be ( Read more... )

I agree, the ceremonies were the most impressive I've ever seen. As to the "typeface" part, the next day one of the commentators said that those people practiced eight hours per day for the last four months to perfect the routine.

I'm glad you explained the part about the bagpipes, I couldn't figure that out.

If you listened in the background, they were working their way through folk songs from tons of countries. I recognized a French tune, at one point. And the rest were definitely not Chinese in origin.

I really loved the opening ceremonies.

And there was a group of us women rather enjoying watching the male swimmers, last night. (We also booed when we found out the volleyball men were wearing shirts!)
