Chapter 1: So I like you... Chapter 2: It must be your smile Chapter 3: Or it could be your touch Chapter 4: But I can’t get you out of my mind
He was taking a shower.
In her shower.
Naked.
“Well of course he would be naked, he wouldn’t take a shower with his clothes on, would he? That makes no sense,” Mao mused to herself as she sat at her dining table, biting the nail of her index finger. She never had a biting habit before, but she seemed to have accumulated quite a few habits since Jun got here- including her constant tendency of glancing over at the bathroom door that currently separated her and a very naked Matsumoto Jun. Drenched in water. “ALL RIGHT!” Mao screamed to herself, “Yes! He is naked! No need to start swooning over it again!”
Mao got up and walked to the sink to splash freezing cold water in her face as she had found it more effective than shoving her head in the freezer (yet another habit she had formed since Jun asked to use the shower). She walked back to the dining table in automated, well-rehearsed movements and started to bite her nail again.
Mao really didn’t know what she was waiting for. She figured the only reason why she continued to sit here was because if she decided to get anywhere near the other half of her apartment which her room and the bathroom were located, she would probably end up doing something really stupid. Like, die happily at a glimpse of Jun naked. YES, AGAIN… Jun is naked. Now can I do anything else beside be a hentai?
She dropped her head hopelessly on the wood table, taking comfort in its cool feel. She wondered what god she must have pissed off to get her into such a predicament.
Jun was staying over her place tonight. The rain was falling too hard, and it didn’t seem to show any signs of slowing until tomorrow morning, conveniently enough. Jun had told her the news about him not being able to get a taxi an hour ago, and started to put on his now dried jacket as if he were going to start walking in the rain. Mao, being the protective and concerned type of friend she was, had scolded him for even thinking the thought and said he might as well be asking for pneumonia. Of course, that only left one option left.
Jun was sleeping over.
Mao tried not to think about him using her face towel to wash himself with. She had set aside a towel and a new bar of soap for him to use, but she didn’t have an extra face towel, so she allowed him to use hers…
Just then the bathroom door opened. Spirals of steam and mist washed out of the doorframe and into her living room in heated puffs of air. Jun’s silhouette formed in the mist, and finally, after what seemed to be an eternity… he stepped out of the bathroom. His shoulders and body were dotted with droplets of water, still rolling down his chest, and the towel he held around his waist was almost too low, as Mao caught glimpses of his hips that she had never dreamed she would see. His hair was messy and ruffled, and he shook his head to splatter wet, juicy, droplets of water out of his dark hair- his eyes smoldering and-
A phone vibrated and Mao jumped. She heard the soft and rapid pitter-patter of water as Jun continued to take his shower in her bathroom. The door was still closed. Was she fantasizing? Mao rubbed her temples.
The phone vibrated again.
Mao shook her head to rid herself of the very vivid image she had in her mind and set out to find the origin of the noise. She found it in Jun’s jacket that he draped on the couch. Mao fished out his phone and gave it a glance: Nino
She looked at the closed door of her bathroom again. Jun would want to know his friend was calling him. She gathered the remains of her logical mind and schooled her face to one of a person in complete control. Mao strolled to the door, vibrating phone still in hand, and knocked.
“Nani?” Jun said over the running water.
“Nino-kun is calling!” Mao said.
“I can’t hear you. Come in, it’s open!”
It was open all this time? Mao shook her head again. Calm. Collected. She tried the door knob and sure enough, it turned easily in her hand. The small room was filled with more steam than she expected. Jun liked his showers really hot, apparently- Mao was amazed he could even breathe.
“Nino-kun is calling you,” Mao said.
“Oh? Go ahead and ask what he wants,” Jun said loudly.
Mao left the bathroom but kept the door open so that some fresh air could wash in. Jun noticed,
“Oi, it’s cold!”
Mao giggled a little and shut the door. She flipped open his phone.
“Mosh Mosh, Nino-kun.” Mao said with gusto.
“Eh? Who’s this?” Nino said on the other line. There seemed to be quite a bit of background noise where he was.
“It’s Jun-kun, of course!” Mao said, jokingly.
There was a short pause on the other line, “Mao-chan, where’s Jun?”
Mao was surprised, “Eh… how did you know it was me?”
“The day Jun calls himself Jun-kun would be the day I start calling myself Kawaii-chan,” Nino said pointedly. He sounded like he was smiling, “And besides, the only girl Jun would even let touch his phone would be you.”
Mao giggled.
“And you have a very distinct laugh too. Now what happened to Jun that you had to answer his phone?”
“Oh… etto, he’s… busy, right now. But he asked me to see what you wanted.”
“Busy, huh?” It sounded like Nino wanted Mao to elaborate but when she didn’t, Nino continued, “Can you let him know me and some of the guys are drinking and want to see if he’s interested in coming? You’re welcome to come too.”
“Ah…” Mao said, glancing at the closed bathroom door, “We’d love to but it’s raining hard enough no cabs want to drive so we’re stuck where we are.”
Nino didn’t reply for a moment.
“Mao-chan?” Nino said, casually.
“Hai?”
“Where exactly are you and Jun right now?”
Uh oh.
“What did he want?” Jun called from the other side of the door and over his shower.
Before Mao could reply, Nino said to her, “It’s fine,” there was a hint of smirk in his tone as if he figured out something and found it very entertaining, “You two have fun. Ja ne.”
“Eh?”
Nino already hung up. That was… different. It took a second for Mao to put together the implication behind Nino’s words. She looked around, then cursed silently to herself. Nino was too smart sometimes…
Mao just realized how close she was standing to the bathroom- Nino must have been able to hear the shower running and Jun talking to her. Jun in shower + Mao being vague when answering Jun’s phone = Jun or Mao’s apartment. It wasn’t a difficult equation to put together. She clapped the phone shut without giving it a second glance and rubbed her temples again. She wondered what stories Nino must be spinning to his friends right now.
“Mao-chan?” Jun said again.
Mao walked over to put his phone on a small table next to the couch before she went to open the bathroom door again.
She nearly tripped over her own two feet.
Jun had opened the shower curtain not too wide, but wide enough so that she could view his broad and toned shoulders as he looked curiously at her.
“Hey, I was about to come out and look for you.”
This was even better than her fantasy. Jun was still partially soapy. And there were tempting water droplets on his face, particularly on the curvature of his lips that Mao was sure would taste like chocolates, strawberries, and everything sinful and fattening if she leaned in and kiss-
“Mao-chan? You okay? You look a little out of it.”
“Eh?” Mao looked startled. “Oh, it’s probably the heat. Etto… the heat of the shower here, it’s hot.” She fanned herself for emphasis.
Jun was still looking at her expectantly.
“Ah! Ano, Nino wanted to know if you wanted to go drinking, but I told him about the taxi situation, so he understood.”
“Un. Thanks.” Jun disappeared behind the curtain again, to which Mao unintentionally let out a breath of relief.
Her imagination started working again- instead of a door and several meters separating her from clothing-less Jun, it was a thin plastic fabric curtain and three steps. She counted to ten slowly in her head again. Argh! Do something, Mao! If you keep standing here you’ll end up tackling him!
That wasn’t such a bad idea...
No! It IS a bad idea. A very bad idea! Distract yourself!
Inoue Mao immediately went to preparing the necessities Jun would be using that night in order to deter her wandering thoughts. She went to rummage underneath her bathroom sink where a compartment was located.
“It’s cold!” Jun complained again.
“Just turn the water heat up higher,” Mao said, focusing her complete attention to finding the toiletries he would need.
Mao found and pulled out a new toothbrush, her various face wash items, and her contact lens solution and a spare case for them.
“You only use toner right before you go to bed, right?” Mao said, inspecting some of the bottles she set out.
“Hai,” Jun replied. He turned off the shower. “How did you know?”
“Good memory,” Mao said with a smile. In truth, Jun always left his toner out in his bathroom, and Mao would see it when she went to his house, which is what spurred her into buying that particular brand. She arranged the toner, toothbrush, and contact solution and case next to the sink and squatted down to put away the rest of the face wash items.
“Mao-chan?” Jun said- his voice travelled easily over the shower curtain with no shower to drown out his words.
“Hm?” She was half paying attention.
“I was wondering if you could grab my shirt and jeans out of the dryer? I would come out and get it myself but I don’t think you’d like that.”
“What wouldn’t I like?”
“Ano… me coming out naked,” Jun’s tone was suddenly teasing. There was a sound of the shower curtain opening, “Unless you prefer that?”
Mao felt her cheeks redden. YESSSSSSS! Instead, she said quickly,
“I can let you borrow another pair of sweats! Jeans aren’t very comfortable to sleep in, ne?”
The rustling of the shower curtain stopped. “Sure.”
Mao left the bathroom to return with another pair of sweatpants that happened to be her favorite color grey and also looked very very good on him. Not that she did that on purpose, of course.
“I’m leaving it on the towel rack,” Mao said. She placed the pants where she indicated and left before she could hear a reply.
She walked out of the bathroom and directly to her room so she could properly breathe again. Way too many close calls…
Mao looked down in relief to find she was still wearing the apron from her cupcake baking. She pushed the door closed and set to taking off various clothing before placing them in a bin in the corner of her room for washing the next day. She then opened her drawers again, this time to find a proper pair of pajamas to sleep in for herself. Again, Mao started her adventure of finding the perfect outfit that was not too cute and not too frumpy for Jun. He would be wearing sweats, but she didn’t want to match him so maybe she would wear shorts instead? But shorts might seem like she’s purposely trying to show off her legs, so maybe she should stick with sweats. Well, she did get these cute pajama bottoms from her birthday… they were cute, not too flashy, and Jun wouldn’t think she was trying to impress him because they were casual. She pulled them out and placed them on her bed before she turned back to finding a shirt. Ah, perfect, a Hello Kitty shirt that would look very nice with-
“Mao-chan, you forgot to give me a shirt…”
Mao heard the bathroom door opening. It was then when Mao realized her perfect, baffling, luck.
She didn’t close her door all the way. And that gave her the best view in Tokyo. Jun was in her grey sweats that he didn’t bother to tie so they sat low on his narrow hips. His hair was messy, wet, and dripping, and he looked slightly agitated as he looked to where she may have gone- an expression on Jun that was far too sexy to be legal. Mao knew that this is exactly what those erotic romantic novels women read all the time were talking about.
“I’m going to freeze this way. I’m ransacking your closet until I find a shirt…” He started to turn towards her room, towards her, in some slow motion effect.
Then Mao realized. If she could see him, he could see her. In just her underwear. In an instant of panic she ran to the other side of her room-Hello Kitty shirt flailing alongside her in her hand- to close her door just as he was opening it…
…And ran straight into his arms.
