What the ever living fuck. I have a cold or the flu or something. How do you even tell the difference? Maybe I have both. Maybe I have the plague!

I'm reading Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip-- Confessions of a Cynical Waiter by Steve Dublanica and I'm enjoying it a lot. While I've never worked in a restaurant, I can appreciate the crazy demands ( Read more... )

Ooooh, I so liked that book! It was right when I first got into memoirs and I enjoyed hearing about some of the etiquette of restaurants and stuff. Between that a friend who served at Morton's for five years, I feel pretty well versed in what not to do to your waiters :-P

Why do people think I'm evil because I don't tip on principle? I miss Japan where they refuse tips.

i dunno how it works in canada, but in the us, waitstaff doesn't make the minimum wage like, say, someone who works at mcdonald's. the state/government is assuming they're going to make up that $5 or so difference an hour in tips. so, yeah, it would be nice if waiters at least made the minimum wage and then tipping would be just for good serivce, but it's not like that. so i feel shitty when i don't tip.

most european countries include the tip in the bill so i never 'tipped' over there. but in india? you tip for every little thing! i've never been to japan, but i assume a waiter there makes enough to live on so that tips aren't necessary.

i mean, in the us, with every tip, you're buying into the system, but on the other hand, i'm not going to punish the person serving my food; they didn't make the laws.

*shrugs*

Making less than minimum wage in Canada is against the law. That's why it's called "minimum wage". It's weird that you can get paid like $4.00 an hour in America. Land of opportunity!

In Japan, it's more of a universal thought so, while you CAN tip, the servers' attitude is "I'm already being paid for this, you don't need to pay me more?"

lol yeah. waitstaff can make as little as $2 an hour in some states.

that's kind of cool though. would be awesome if tipping really was an option rather than an expectation.
