Y'know, that's ever so weird. I was just thinking yesterday about that house and trying to find out some more about it... Shame it's going to be knocked down, it is very lovely and would make a perfect Gothic mansion. Can you imagine the parties you could have in there?? :-)

I have a tendancy to fall in love with old buildings who need a bit of TLC and she currently has my heart.

I can just picture her with gargoyles, stained glass windows, a night-scented garden.... I bet she could be incredibly elegant.

And of course, stupid amounts of room for partying!

I was looking at it yesterday, too, as I walked past on the way to a rehearsal just down the road. I wondered who owned it and why it was boarded up, and vaguely suspected it was about to get eaten by some new college development :-(

Ah this would be the magnificent house you mentioned before then :)

it is a shame because decent houses are hard
to come by these days (well you know made out brick as opposed to plasterboard at least).

Oh no, poor old house. It looks like there was a fire inside, from some angles - maybe the structure is irrevocably damaged?

If anybody tells you off for walking around in the dark without a chaperone I will personally send them in a parcel to Saudi Arabia where that attitude belongs. We should walk around like free people.

Lol - I mean more from a point of view of them being worried about me being safe rather than thinking I'm not capable of getting from a to b solo. Like, for instance, my Mum being concerned about me.

Whilst night-time streets should be safe, they often aren't, and given how prone I am to people following me in broad daylight.... will do the post I was going to at some point.

Yep, there was a fire but seemingly it didn't have too much of an affect on the property. There's an arguement that it's unsafe but there's a counter arguement that it could be MADE safe. Of course, at a cost but...

...it was supposedly the house that inspired Tom's Midnight Garden.

And it's just fabulous.

WANT! :D

If it's subsiding, doesn't that mean the houses near it are also subsiding and should be surveyed now as a matter of urgency? I am sceptical.

And I bet the flats would have gone for £1500 pcm rent and nobody except London bankers would have been able to rent them. Is there no end to these developers' greed?

I think it's a shame that so many old houses are knocked down for more common variety flats. I'd love to live in a house with so much character, though I'd never have the patience or the money to do it up myself. :)

According to that link on the 4th March the council decided to not approve the application. Does that mean that it's still under threat of being pulled down even if there's nothing to replace it right now? That'd be a terrible loss I think.

It's still under threat of demolition - the council rejected the proposals for the new build but not the tearing it down, though I think there has to be something else lined up before it can be demolished.

Here's hoping one of us wins the lottery this weekend so we can take it on as a project! :)
