i just got back from visiting an old roommate/friend at her and her family's farm in southern indiana (gibson county, y'all!). it was a really awesome weekend!!

You seem really angry that she eats meat now. As if you wouldn't be friends if you didn't have a history. Do you feel the same way about all people who eat meat, or is there something else here?

i'm not angry that she eats meat right now. i'm kinda angry that anyone eats meat, ever. i'd still be her friend if she had always eaten meat, too. politics are not the only basis of my friendships, they just become really important if my relationship with someone is really deep.

i guess what i'm feeling is this strange confusion: all of her politics are so right on and i respect her deeds and actions, but she eats meat. like, it's this huge exception, y'know?

that's the navigation i'm talking about. i never want to be all self-righteous up on my pedestal, so it's new for me to think of her as someone with awesome politics that also happens to eat meat. because for a long time, i felt as if these two things (good politics and meat eating) were mutually exclusive, it's a growing experience for me to understand this.
