I can relate to the not smiling. I smile often but am told I don't give off a "I want to be friends," vibe.

Really? Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one that does that sort of thing! :-) Sometimes it is intentional, so that people will leave me alone. It works really well! Sometimes it's just habit, and when I try to smile, it just feels phony.

You should only smile when you feel like it. Someone with a rare true smile is so much more appealing than those people who wear a constant fake smile. At least I feel like that :)
I guess I smile quite a lot which might be one of the reasons why most people like me. (They don't understand that I don't smile at them or because of them but because I'm pretty happy with my life or because of some simple thing I have just seen or thought about) BUT I hate faking smiles and I'll only do that when I can't avoid that.

Working retail, customers expect you to smile ALL of the time, otherwise they think that you're giving bad customer service. I've tried to fake smiling, it just doesn't work for me if it's not genuine. Some day I'm hoping I will want to smile more and it will be genuine :-)
